Grateful Dead Cover Bands??????

I remember going to some really good shows at Lupos and can't for the life of me remember the name of the band we used to see. They had a good local following and really jammed. I used to see them on a regular basis in the early 90's. Anyone know their name and know if they are still playing? There was another band I used to see at the Bullpen in New Bedford on Tuesday nights I think it was. They were awesome too and I can't remember their name? I killed too many brain cells in my time I guess.

Dark Star Orch. is the one Dead cover band everyone raves about. Might it have been Jazz is Dead. They did instrumental versions of dead songs and had some pretty heavy players.

Pearly Baker is the band at the Bullpen.

Back then? Could have been Out of the Blue.

There used to be a band called Max Creek that did a lot of Dead back in the day

Max Creek was excellant

Slipknot was another, they played Boston quite a bit

Anyone remember Harpers Ferry I think it was in Allston

NEBE, little feat is not a dead cover band

Thanks guys! It was Max Creek at Lupos that I saw a bunch of times over the years. Pearly Baker was just as good and a very intimate setting. One of my college roommates went to high school with the drummer. I miss those days. Anyone know if these bands still play in the area?

Max Creek still makes the rounds. I used to see them at Lupo's as well!

If you've experienced the GD live, Dark Star Orchestra will give you goosebumps. There are certain moments during the right songs that you're there. I was never one to go check out GD cover bands, but first saw them on another longtime GD fan's recommendation down at Toad's in New Haven. Dropped my friggin' jaw.

"Orchestra" is the right word, too. They take a show in GD history and play it song for song the way an orchestra might play a classical composition. They even set the stage up in a way that's era-appropriate, and they play the tunes era-appropriate as well. They announce the date of the original show at the end of the night, after all the hardcores in the crowd try to guess, based off the setlist. All the little jams and nuances that mark certain time periods are in there. It's amazing. Best thing of all is that when they do 70's shows the "Donna" sings in tune and sounds great. If anything immediately separates them from the Dead, it's how smooth they are vocally and musically. It's the Dead without the mistakes!(but also without the musical chance taking that made the Dead so great).

I'm seeing the Dead on Sat. night in Worcester, thinking this might be the last time I see them all together. Though nowadays (and I feel weird saying this, but...) if I wanted to catch a show that best captured the GD experience in its heyday, I'd go see DSO. They're that good.

There is a RI band called Loose Change. They were doing almost all dead stuff for a while, but have branched out to other stuff as well lately. My buddy plays bass for them, and they still do quite a bit of Dead.
