Mexico city has the highest population of any mexican city...

it has the potential of spilling over into the USA quite easily and is NO Joke.

I'm not worried. The only curious part is how people in Texas and CA contracted the same strain. I'm sure it will make things pretty easy to track though. Pigs don't move around as easily as birds.

The US public has been programed to only be afraid of bird flu. Many people probably don't even know what swine means.

My wife works in a lab and started talking about this as soon as she walked in the door yesterday. She says it is extremely contagious.

They believe that this strain is transferring from person to person, not pig to person, thats what has them scared. And good luck trying to track the boarder jumpers that are carrying this.

When people start dying at an alarming rate, then I'll begin to worry.

This sounds exactly the same as the reports about bird flu.


With regards to the boarder jumpers, this would be a good excuse to shoot jumpers on site. We can use the excuse of "National Security and Public Safety." After the last administration, that seems to be a pretty easy excuse to use.

The World Health Organization is forming a panel to deal with it currently.

From what i heard it's like a level 3 problem with level 4 being a
pandemic.

There was also some talk that it is possibly a mutant strain of swine and bird flu.

It is spread person to person and hits all ages of people.

The way I understand it is the virus mutations take place in the ducks. A virolent strain then catches on and spreads amongst the birds. This flu cannot be spread from the birds to people. On small farms where ducks and pigs are raised in close proximity the flu is contracted by the pigs from the birds.It spreads amongst the pigs and people can get it from the pigs. Once it jumps to the people it spreads from people to people rapidly. IMO airplanes are are like incubators. Everyone on the plane could get exposed from a single passenger on board who has it. Often the virus spreads most rapidly when its first cotracted and before the more visible symptoms are abovious like fever , sinus inflamation , body aches. So anyway , i think the idea that we can stop it from spreading to the US is not too sound.

The interesting thing is that in a poor country like Mexico, where many do not have access to good medical care, many people die from it. So far in the USA there have been no fatalities (as of the last news reort I heard) and that is mostly because peole get faster and better care here.

Anyway , its something to be conscious of but I wouldn't let it rule my life. If you get sck with the typical chills and bady aches that usually mean more than a simple cold , go to the doctor. At least keep an eye out for secondary bacterial infections that result from the virus. very typically the nasal and respiratory infections do happen and they are what i think bring peole down , especially pneumonia.

I dunno. News this morning doesn't look good. Increasingly it looks like the only question is how severe it is and how often it kills. Luckily it seems mild in a lot of cases but then at the other end there's more then a few dead in Mexico. If it's only as deadly as a normal flu (which does kill quite a few people) the public won't be quite so excited. Since panic is already starting to occur it might be relevant info.

I think his comment was more to say that the illegals can't be "tracked" where as perhaps a Mexican business person could be.

The Northeast has a massive population of illegals from Central America,including Mexicans.

But I agree with Spence.Cool beans was more than likely making the point of how do you track someone crossing the border illegally?The only way is through being caught and since there are literally tens of thousands of illegals already in country,not many are being caught at the border and when they are finally caught its already to late.

Nothing changes ideas quicker then when things happen close to home.

I don't think so. The number of people who legally cross the border into the US every day from Mexico is quite large. I'd wager there's a far larger risk from legal travel which will be by air and vehicle and has the potential to get deeper into the US much more quickly. If they close the border it would be this traffic they're trying to stop.

That's not to say that we can't do a better job at illegal immigration enforcement, just that I don't think the Pandemic will cause a huge outcry.

Of course border jumpers didn't carry it to NY, the initial speed of something like this is of course spread by legitimate travelers. Point was legitimate travelers are easy to track, unlike the illegals, and are probably a lot more apt to get treated, while illegals may be more apt to not seek medical assistance (emergency room will treat anyone), until much further into it and after spreading it to a lot more people. I was trying to point out that illegals add a big multiplier to the issues.

Eh, I don't think so. Spring break was back in March. The virus should have had more than enough time to completely incubate and show its presence a few weeks ago.

I think we are actually fortunate the virus is popping up now. If this had started appearing a month or two ago while we were in the midst of flu season, all our domestic medical resources and facilities would be stretched to the max by anyone with a sniffle.

I remember reading over the winter that Google was working with the Dept. Public Health on this map software to track outbreaks and help the government create a plan of action for containment.

We'll see if it's needed.

That's common sense. Every guy in the Navy is told to get checked up after each "port visit" to mexico.... :) prolly not checkin for swine flu though...... :jump:
