I was out on the boat this morning and ventured into the canal from MMA through half way then turned around. Quite a few folks tossing plugs and jigs along the banks...

Three weeks or so until consistent large fish will show. Fill the goodwill jar until then. Just a suggestion.

I'll bet it's closer to 10 days. Sometime between 5/5 and Mothers Day for decent fish. 40" fish will be here by Mothers Day if the past is any kind of teacher ;)

There will be single large fish taken within a week no doubt. I've gotten good ones(20#) as early as May 2, but I'm talking about good numbers of good ones. I did get my biggest canal fish ever on May 19, so who knows. Three weeks from today is the 18th, so I'm probably starting up around then.

This year, the Canal is going to be a ZOO, all those fish last year will draw crowds from far and wide. My buddy was talking to the guys at CMS and they said that the orders for canal sticks have been through the roof... not even close to any other year. There's a lot of money riding on the return of those macks. :spin:

The canal was my go to place last summer. Yet the above statements just add to why I'm getting a kayak.

And it will probably work the same way as the upper bay last year, it did'nt happen the same.

mag minnow 04-27-2009 03:34 PM

As long as everyone goes home when the sun goes down I won't have to care about Canal crowds...

the point 04-27-2009 05:19 PM

5/4 seemed to be my Magic date. Theres still no fish in the Canal, thats for damn sure... stick to the Beach's.

BigFish 04-27-2009 07:03 PM

Was there this afternoon.....lots of herring for sure! Made a few casts to test some plugs.....no takers! Nice day!

Bingo--I already have plans to be out of town on Memorial Day weekend.

Just as long as all the wannabe jiggers don't leave braid balls all over the bottom

There are No fish in the ditch! Everyone go away!:cens:

WESTPORTMAFIA 04-27-2009 10:08 PM

I'm watching the 11pm news and there is SWINE FLU in the Canal. It will be there for the whole year until 1st snow. Once it snows it will go away and be back in May 2010. Please stay away from this place at least until Jan to be safe. Even the fish passing through have the FLU. It's not safe. Also all of RI is shut down. You do not want to fish RI until I post again regarding this concern. Sell all your gear real cheap on this site and buy freshwater gear since the FLU doesn't affect ponds or freshwater streams.

Last year was an anomaly. High gas prices kept the pleasure boat/weekend sportfisherman admirals boats on the trailer or tied to the docks. This was the perverbial silver lining for the canal crowd.

Less boat traffic (some mornings didn't see any) in the canal on breaking tides kept the fish up longer thus increasing your chances.

The mackerel really never left the canal, even in late July thru August they were there, along with pogies and squid.

This year what with gas prices down a couple bucks will see more transit recreational boat traffic, that will put a damper on the break.

The wild card is the bait and what species take up residence and how long. The Bournedale run's viability in producing drop backs and young of the year fry falling out will also play a big part.
No two years are ever quite the same and banner years are few and far between and last year was every bit the banner year there.

I cross it twice a day to and from work. The 10' JK conventional rides with me all summer on those breaking tide periods every two weeks.
We will see what we will see.

Yep, that's exactly what I said. Nothing ever happens twice, even when you can't come up with a reason why it shouldn't :laughs: (love that saying)

Flap -- I hear ya, thought the same things when I didn't have any targets out there to throw at. :hihi:
