More common sense from the The White House

Took you about 3 hours longer than I thought to bring that up.

Looks like this was a pretty standard event where they update official photos of Air Force One flying near landmarks. State and local authorities were notified according to the White House.

Just some confusion but I can certainly see people being freaked out.

I'd wager that had the White House stated they were going to cancel all landmark photos because it might frighten people you'd be ranting that Obama's being intimidated by terrorists :hihi:

PaulS 04-28-2009 06:58 AM

It was stupid not to notify the city in advance. When you have people running out of buildings crying, you did something wrong. I don't think people outside NYC realize how much 9/11 effected them - so much more than any other city.

eastendlu 04-28-2009 07:56 AM

The City was notified problem was no one told the mayor.:smokin:

Cool Beans 04-28-2009 09:49 AM

Saw this of the people freaking out as it flew over. Sounds like they scared em pretty good. Today, it's no big deal, but if it would have been a Bush mistake, people would be talking about lawsuits for mental trauma caused by his stupidity.

Because I don't generally start new topics about things that aren't policy related.

It was pretty stupid though. The video by Cool Beans demonstrates the panic is caused.

Looks like Obama was pissed about it too.

Now, please bear with me here as I'm not very smart. I understand that updated photos of Air Force One are paramount to our country getting out of this financial crisis and erradicating the swine flu, but did they have to do it in NYC? Again, I'm not too bright, but couldn't they just get a new photo of the airplane and photoshop the Statue of Liberty into it? I would think that the staff of the President of the United States would have decent enough technology available to make a nice photo of his plane without having to fly it over the city that has suffered the worst domestic terrorist attack ever at the hands of men who used planes as weapons.

JohnR 04-28-2009 10:37 AM

Was a dumbass thing to sat though I won't do the pavlovian leap and blame it on the Obama admin unless it turns out some political appointed hack made the call...

Nebe 04-28-2009 10:45 AM

I heard the planes dropped leaflets that said-

This has been a test of the national freak the %$%$%$%$ out network.. this is only a test...

Someone told them to fly by the World Trade Towers, they forgot they had been planed.

Cool Beans 04-28-2009 11:57 AM

I find it hard to believe either Obama or someone very close to him didn't know about this, as there are only 2 of these planes. Whenever he travels, both planes are in the air, so someone had to inform him or ask him about it to ensure he would not be traveling that day. It may have seemed like no big deal, "Hey Boss, we are going to be using Air Force One for a photo op and fly around NYC. Don't worry about it, the authorities know about it and it will be escorted the whole way."

To claim total ignorance to it is hard to believe. You have only 2 planes and you cant go anywhere this day. I'm sure due to the security reasons, with it being unavailable for an emergency that would require him to use the plane, someone, if not Obama was aware.

Bottom line it was extremely stupid on the governments part! What if someone was hurt, trampled or killed during the panic that was caused? Very Irresponsible!

RIROCKHOUND 04-28-2009 12:07 PM

Is it true the city was notified and the higher-ups were not notified?

either way, not a wise decision..

What do you expect? He was a COMMUNITY ORGANIZER! And don't tell me he was pissed. His first emotion should have been embarassment, not anger. It's his plane, on his orders. He should have issued an immediate apology to the people of New York. Is this the leadership we are waiting for?

Where exactly is your evidence that it was "on his orders"?

I, for one, would like to think our President has better things to do than know where Air Force One is at every moment of the day. He appoints people to keep track of things like of that nature, and the appointed person got a reaming over the incident.

If he were sitting in the plane 'enjoying the view', then I'd be right there with you. Or maybe he should have had Marine One land on Wall St. with a big banner that said "Mission Accomplished" after the Dow got back over 8000 points.

I like how you try to throw in the "COMMUNITY ORGANIZER" like it's some ultra-derogatory term, kind of like how new-cons throw around "those libs". Especially since that part of your comment has absolutely nothing to do with anything, and the rest of your comment is just incorrect.

Air Force One is his "LifeBoat" and "Command and Control Center" for a national emergency. He or someone working directly for him is informed every time it moves.

JohnR 04-28-2009 01:09 PM

I would be confident that the Secret Service knows O's schedule better than he does. This request might, just maybe, have gotten to his chief of staff's office. Seriously doubt O screwed that up.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- After a YouTube video showed panicked New Yorkers scrambling as a Boeing 747 flew frighteningly close to the lower Manhattan skyline, a former Homeland Security adviser questioned whether the man who approved the flyby should remain in his White House office.

Fran Townsend, who advised President George W. Bush for more than three years, called the move "crass insensitivity" in the wake of 9/11.
"I'd call this felony stupidity. This is probably not the right job for Mr. Caldera to be in if he didn't understand the likely reaction of New Yorkers, of the mayor," Townsend said Tuesday on CNN's "American Morning."
Louis Caldera, director of the White House Military Office, quickly apologized for Monday's incident after the planes prompted workers and residents to evacuate buildings in New York and New Jersey. http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/.elemen...tabs/video.gif Watch Townsend slam Caldera »
"Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision," Caldera said. "While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it's clear that the mission created confusion and disruption."
The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft, which functions as Air Force One when the president is aboard, was taking part in a classified, government-sanctioned photo shoot.
An angry Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it "defies the imagination" that an agency would schedule the photo shoot so near the site of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center.
President Obama also reportedly expressed outrage. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, said the FAA's decision to not announce the flyby "borders on being either cruel or very, very stupid."
Don't Miss

Witnesses reported seeing the plane circle over the Upper New York Bay near the Statue of Liberty before flying up the Hudson River. http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/.elemen...tabs/video.gif Watch the plane fly over Manhattan »
The YouTube video shows dozens of people standing in a parking lot, watching the plane approach. As it nears, they begin to run. Someone unleashes an expletive. "Run, run!" says one person. "Oh my God," cries another.
Two officials said the White House Military Office was trying to update its file photos of Air Force One. The officials said the president was angry when he learned Monday afternoon about the flight.
"The president was furious about it," one of the officials said.
On Tuesday, Obama told reporters, "It was a mistake. It was something we found out about along with all of you. And it will not happen again."
Bloomberg said he, too, was perturbed.http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/.elemen...tabs/video.gif Watch the White House apologize »
"I'm annoyed -- furious is a better word -- that I wasn't told," he said, calling the FAA's decision to withhold details about the flight "ridiculous" and "poor judgment."
"Why the Defense Department wanted to do a photo op right around the site of the World Trade Center defies the imagination," he said. "Had we known, I would have asked them not to."
Linda Garcia-Rose, a social worker who counsels post-traumatic stress disorder patients in an office three blocks from where the World Trade Center stood, called the flight an "absolute travesty." http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/.elemen...tabs/video.gif Watch the White House respond to questions about the scare »
"There was no warning. It looked like the plane was about to come into us," she said. "I'm a therapist, and I actually had a panic attack."
Garcia-Rose, who works with nearly two dozen patients ages 15 to 47, said she was inundated with phone calls from patients.
"They're traumatized. They're asking 'How could this happen?' They're nervous. Their anxiety levels are high," she said. iReport.com: Tell us what you think
Garcia-Rose said she is considering filing a class-action suit against the government for sanctioning the plane's unannounced flight.
"I believe the government has done something really wrong," she said.

Capt. Anna Carpenter of Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland said local law enforcement agencies and the FAA had been given notice of the exercise.
New York Police Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne said the department had been alerted about the flight "with directives to local authorities not to disclose information about it."

You can do your own reading and research and draw your conclusions at to whether this one is on the President. I am fine with the fact he admitted it was a mistake. Also, it was an Air Force One replica plane with an F-16 doing a low altitude flyover of the biggest city in our country. It required FAA approval and it shut down the surrounding airspace while it happened.

* This has nothing to do with George Bush.

You are so right PS. 9/11 affected everybody in the country, but unless you lived in the area there is know way of knowing how it really felt.

Like with the Oaklahoma bombing, i felt it deeply, especially with some children involved,
but know for sure i didn't really know how they felt being so far away.

Out of sight, out of mind, just part of human nature.

It also has nothing to do with Community Organizers. Or Obama's present activities as one.

buckman 04-28-2009 03:18 PM

Well since you guys like to bring Bush into everything, if he had done it you would think it was felony stupid.
So let me understand this, Obama didn't know anything about it and neither did his Homland Security Sec.. Right, someone just took the plane for some campaign photo ops. and know one knows who or why.
The only thing more stupid, would be believing they didn't know.

I hear a government car just drove over the speed limit in Idaho. I wonder what Obama is going to do about it?

Standard event:jump: Happens all the time. 9/11 and this time

striperman36 04-28-2009 05:15 PM

The Prez says he wasn't told of the engagement, no one believes that? It's all his fault? Like how many people work in the White House?
Give it a rest, it was Cheney's idea anyway.
