Some new insight into returning stripers
 

Here's an interesting article on migrating stripers. I had gotten similar yet anecdotal information from divers at Woods Hole in the past.

thanks for the article. i've always wondered if they do return every year. seems if a place has fish for more than a few years, it could be a homing instint?

No news here, I have thought about this for some time, the only logical reason for this has to be a genetic imprint of some sort. Otherwise theoretically they could all show up at once at one location and nowhere else which would have grave consequences on the entire ecosystem.

They are programed to go to several locations as the season progesses, places where the abundance of bait will coincide with thier arrival and it's demise coincide with thier genetically fostered urge to move to the next local until the signs all point south for most.:uhuh:

and the 30#'s i C&R 2 ago years have become fiddies,
and the 40#'s that BEAT me two years ago have become sixties,
and THAT 50#-60#'er that damn near spooled me last year and
still got away will be a 60#-70# THIS YEAR!!!! of course this is ALL

based on the 10#/year addage of weightage theory,,,,,,,,,,,
but DZ echoed my thoughts of why my big producer produces
with his preferred lie theory~~~in short, iffin it's RIGHT and the patterns REPEAT, it's gonna be RIGHT~~~ each and every time the repitition occurs. this place repeats down to the NIGHT, within a tide or two. truly amazing how the same monstahs will return to the same preferred udl :uhuh: :uhuh: :uhuh:

hence the necessity for BassLawgs that i learned to do from Crazy AL.

yes I agree but I think it has to do with the food chain they follow or know what baitis are in certin spot at that time of year........

The catches each year have grown on records from the past until, as Nelson said yesterday, the peak concentration may have passed.

"There are indications that numbers are declining slightly," he said. "We won't see higher abundances."

There are "limits" to what the ecosystem can support, he noted.

My own tagging returns have bore out that bass return to the same areas... I have had over a dozen tag returns, as far as 3 years latter when the fish was caught back in the same river it was tagged in...

furthermore, I've found that certain year classes favor particular habits or habitat... and as that year class matures and gets culled during it's migrations ,less, and less fish frequent that local, until a new year class takes up residence in that spot...
