Among the massive 17 billion in cuts proposed by Obama is to cut the funding for the Loran C system.

There is a move afoot to try and save the system. If you want to keep it it would be a good idea to write your congresscritter.

I know both, many nights running on radar and compass, in the fog, BUT... but if we were at the fish tails after trolling boxes and zig-zags all day, and it gets foggy... I'd like a back-up system.
besides, out there I'd rather glance at a few loran numbers, but thats just me... after all, I work in State Plane Feet most of the time... what do I know |

And what exactly is a terrorist going to use the GPS system for? "Tom tom, direct me to the most populated area." :hihi: |
Yep, that the study. What to use the GPS system for? How about guiding a rudimentary missile launched off a ship 100 miles off the coast? The Chinese have already demonstrated their satellite killing ability, no doubt other countries can do it as well. Any number of possibilities to take down the GPS system. Did you read the report?

Or has MacGuyver turned into a terrorist? If they can afford to have what? 6 people? shipped to the US, put up, in flight training I'm sure they can afford black market Russian guided missiles. |
Nicely timed noise about potential GPS failure:
http://www.pcworld.com/businesscente...in_a_year.html |
I started running from buoy to buoy and listening for the bells , whistles and horns and counting blinks and dot and dashes from light nhouses. I then bought an amazing electronic device called a radio direction finder. That was the cats meow. I could get a fix on the Brenton tower beacon all the way from New Haven Ct. Then I waited for the funds to go up and the prices to go down and finally got a loran. Used that for about 6 or 7 years and finally had a hand held GPS that could tell be if I was on my own mooring or the one next to me in Newport Harbor. As it got easier every step I was quite aware that it was all getting more and more dangerous the more I relied on instruments and the less I relied on myself. I often turned off the GPS and made my way to Cutty or Nantucket with the charts and Elbridge current maps and going Buoy to Buoy just to keep in practice. Everyone who is out there a lot should do it too.
Now I can't really see why anyone would prefer Loran to GPS. As far as what happens if there is war with someone sophisticated enough to take out or jam satellites well I don't think navgating the coast will be a problem cause we will all be glowing in the dark. Anyway , honest question , why would you prefer Loran to GPS? |
Well, Some old farts like me still have thousand of fishing spots that are listed in loran TDs and not in Lat/lon. Also return to waypoint is more accurate with loran than with GPS.
