Something extremely important is about to happen in RI with regard to public access parking. I urge any or you who are RI residents to participate as instructed by the following email from Steve Medeiros. Please pass this on to every member in your fishing club as well. For years the Public Access Committee that I chair has struggled with the issue of public parking at our designated rights of way to the ocean. The legislation proposed is the only way we will ever get designated parking at or near these rights of way. Please take the time to read the following and TAKE ACTION !

We constantly urge anglers to get off their duffs to do something important and here is a perfect opportunity.

PUBLIC ACCESS (RIGHT OF WAY) to the shore is a right of all citizens, but we all know that most of the ROW's in this state are nulled because there are "NO PARKING" signs all around them.

RISAA has supported legislation introduced by Rep. Peter Kilmartin which would mandate that all cities and towns PROVIDE PARKING at all designated Rights of Way in their towns. We collected over 1,000 signatures on a petition at the fishing show in April.

This legislation has PASSED COMMITTEE!

It now goes for a vote before the full HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES on WEDNESDAY, but we need your help to get it passed.

In part:
"(iv) In conjunction with this subdivision, every state department controlling state-owned land close to or adjacent to designated rights-of-way shall set out the land, or so much of the land as it deems necessary for public parking, and every city and town that owns land, including, but not limited to, public streets, close to or adjacent to CRMC designated rights-of-way shall set out the land, or so much of the land, as it deems necessary for public parking."

Public access to the Rhode Island shoreline continues to diminish every year. This is a chance to help ensure that citizens are able to use the shore that belongs to everyone.

Got a little wishy-washy response from my rep, "while in general supporting the concept..." paraphrasing. He was curious of the need is to build parking lots at the end of streets (not practical and not something people are asking , eh?). Not sure if it was a hedge against people (like him) that live near the end of a road that joins the RI Shoreline.

Communities won't have to build them if they can show CRMC there is parking nearby. If there isn't then provide some within resonable walking distance - it won't work everywhere but will work in many areas.

they , politicians, seem to believe that because we surf fish, were either stupid or a little slow. i know i'm both for believeing them.
