Spooling a Penn 330GTI
I'm about to spool a Penn 330GTi wire dacron and wire and was wondering if anybody knows how much braid and wire I should use?
It's time to start getting ready only 8 weeks to go ! |

if i was you i wouldhave a tackle shop spool it for you. on one of there spooling machines....gets good tight spool.. i dont know about dacron tho... nice reel.... you TubeNworm fishin' ??? |
I agree with Striper, with wire I think a spooling machine would be invaluable. If your providing the wire and dacron backing I can't imagine them charging you more than a few dollars....You have plenty of time, won't need that wire until June...Late April & May are herring time.....:)

Yea, I thought I'd do some tubin' this year.
I do a lot of trolling 9er rigs and want to be able to run them deep. I was thinking of putting sections of dacron every 100' of so and trolling on the dacron instead of always being on the wire. |
thats a cool idea.:) less fatigue on wire, yes?
|
Isn't that a levelwind reel ????
|
Unfortunately, yes it is.
This is the rig I use for newwwbeees. They have a problem cranking and "leveling" all at the same time. The other reason is, I fish single handed quite a bit and usually run 2 rigs at a time using outrodders. When I get a hit I usually fight the fish and crank the 2nd rig in with my "3rd hand" when it gets in the way. Otherwise I would use the Penn 113HSP's I've never spooled a 330GTi and that was why I was looking for an estimate of how much dacron backing & 50# wire. Long answer to short question :-) |
The reason I asked is I thought a rule of thumb was you can't use wire on a level wind, cause it will wear the guide, I know they are not ceramic or carbide.
In my early days I didn't think to put a roller on the last eye, and guess what, the wire wore straight through the eye. SO, on my level winds I use leadcore for tube n' wormin, and 9'er rigs. I use conventionals like squidders and shimano tritons (non-levelwind) for wire whether its solid or braided. (with a tip roller !!) If people have used wire on levelwinds, i would like to know how they held up. |
I spool my 113h with 300 feet wire marked at 100 -200- 250 -300. I use leadline down to 18 feet then wire. The wire rig will get you from 22-42 feet depending on the your speed, line out, current and the direction you are traveling. Up current vs downcurrent. I do not agree with the dacron spacers. IMHO any time you tie one line to another you make another knot that could slip and cost you a fish. I put about 1 foot of black permenant marker to mark the spots. As far as using the 330 GTI Levlewind for newbies with wire, been there down that one word rat's nest. I did not see any advantage at all. However the 330 could be set up with mono as a eel rig or leadcore. Good Luck. See you at the bridge next summer. by the way I dropped my 330 I over the side last summer eeling one night. I almost went in after it..but not quite.

Duke,
Does that mean you won't come rescue me when I've got wire from bow to stern? You'd be welcome to whatever is on the end on the wire. |
Mega,
Hey I had the same thoughts / concerns you had when I was running the 330GTI's. But after one outing with the 113H's I switched over. Now the 330GTI is for guest on the boat, and a backup to the 113H's |
I saw some article I think it was in on the water about using a trolling sinker in place of wire. I am going to try it this summer.

What sort of problems did you have? I like to know when I should duck or throw them over board. |
mega,
I never had a problem with them, I just find the 113H too be much easier to use, and it has a quicker retrieve, also the drag seems to be improved. The 113H is a super tough proven reel for wireline. I think the key to keeping the 330GTI working correctly with wire is to have it cleaned and serviced a couple times a season. IMO the levelwind shaft is the weak link on these reels. BTW: If you need a 330GTI attatched to a nice St. Croix rod, there is one on the bottom of the ocean by the S.E. Light of BI. Last season a passenger had a major brain fart and dropped it over the side when another line went down.:smash: |
Mega-
See the dam reels are cursed, thats two over the side out of a couple of posts. They are evil.. |
The Penn 330 reel society is goin to be protesting your abuse of their reels !
Those rigs are probably somewhere in the Chesepeake by now. |
