What's wrong with my email?

Every now and then I get an email that looks like this instead of normal with pictures or titles and link. I'm almost positive it has something to do with a setting I must have changed during my virus war about a month ago. Any ideas why these emails are not appearing normally in Microsoft Office Outlook?

you're probably setup not to accept html e-mails.

probably Rich text or Text only.

go to Tools - Options and on the Preference tab Click E-Mail options. look and see if Read all Standard mail in Plain text is checked.

Saltheart 06-23-2009 10:54 AM

Nope , not checked. Should it be?

The Dad Fisherman 06-23-2009 11:11 AM

Unchecked is what you want...

is this personal e-mail or corporate e-mail? If corpoarate it could be the e-mail server that is doing the conversion

Raven 06-23-2009 11:13 AM

now you need a GMAIL account...

great features

it's on the front page of google

UserRemoved1 06-23-2009 11:18 AM

it's improperly formatted SPAM

Saltheart 06-23-2009 11:22 PM

Its my personal email. It happens from a few different sources but not all the time. It just started after I scrubbed all kind of files from the system trying to clean a virus about a month or so ago. I might get 4 normal emails from a given source then one looks like this. Happens with my united mileage plus email , sometimes sears , sometimes HSN , etc.

Raven 06-24-2009 05:01 AM

right

but you can have Gmail import that personal email as well

so that they all come to the same box

Saltheart 06-25-2009 02:35 PM

No other ideas as to what is wrong here? I know its my machine , not the source because I got tons of email from these same sites before but only recently had the issue.

Next thing I'm going to look at is the realtime settings on my AV programs and firewall. Maybe I have something clicked there that prevents the HTML format sometimes?

The Dad Fisherman 06-25-2009 09:51 PM

when you open the message what format does it say its in? Text, Rich Text, or HTML?

Just open the message and select "Format" at the top

Saltheart 06-25-2009 11:05 PM

Plain text is checked.

Raven 06-26-2009 04:22 AM

then it won't show images...........only text

Saltheart 06-26-2009 09:10 AM

But I didn't tell it to be plain text. That's just what it says. Above I double checked and ...."Read all Standard mail in Plain text ." is not checked. ????

The Dad Fisherman 06-28-2009 05:55 PM

Somewhere along the way its being converted to plain text. Maybe you're ISP

Saltheart 06-28-2009 06:13 PM

I checked the virus programs , doesn't seem to be them. I don't know but its very annoying and so intermittent I'm scratching my head!

The Dad Fisherman 06-28-2009 07:26 PM

Check w/ your E-Mail provider and see if its something they are doing. might be as simple as a phone call and you'll be all set

Raven 06-28-2009 07:34 PM

saltheart

what about the advanced properties window inside your internet options icon in the "Control Panel"

i noticed that there's a check box in there that has to be checked also to view pictures

take a look in there....

:point: compare to these settings

the only other option is to re-set things back to the default settings until you find it...

Saltheart 06-29-2009 08:18 PM

I already tried setting everything to default and no help.

I just read a thing about this happening do to a feature of the AVG8.5 software. I turned off what they said was causing it. It won't correct the bad ones I already got but supposedly the new emails should be normal. It will take a few days to find out because not all of them were affected. It said it was probably corrupting the HTML format when it scanned the emails and added the message
No virus found
AVG8.5 and whatever.

I hope that's it!

Saltheart 06-30-2009 12:53 PM

So far so good since I turned off some of the AVG8.5 incoming mail scanning features. I got an HSN spam mail that was fine and all of them have been corrupted since the virus battle when I installed the AVG as part of my fix.

very weird how easy it is to screw up your computer in one area (in this case email) by doing something like adding a virus scan.

Oh well , lets assume its fixed. If I do get something bad again I'll post oit but anyone using AVG 8,5 should know that the email feature can mess up anything coming into your inbox as HTML.
