snell vs palomar
 

I have always been a palomar guy for all my knots

this year i started snelling my eel leaders

a couple of things i have noticed

1. Less weed pickup w snelling...could be due to the tag end going with the eel as opposed to facing you on the retieve

2. Also see a different action in swimming an eel ( w weight down its throat) seemd to be less herky jerky and a lot smoother



Is it just me.....or has anyone else experience this after making the switch from palomar to snell.......

I Snell all my hooks, bait or for eels.
I only use the Palomar knot for swivels.
I feel that the hook sits better & you get a better hook set snelling a hook.
The Palomar knot can slide around the eye of the hook.

I do the same thing, snells for eels and palomars for swivels.

I have never used anything but my own snell on a hook, I think you get a better hook set with the snell knot.

I used to use snelled and now use polamar. I think you got the weed thing right , its do to the tag end. I didn't notice any difference in the eel action. I switch because I used to buy pre snelled hooks but couldn't always get the hook I wanted (I became paranoid and wanted bigger and bigger hooks! :) ). Obviously I tie my own polamar onto whatever hook I want (8/0 !) :).

All snells, all the time. Get the octopus style hooks with the turned back eyes too so you can snug the snell knot right up against it and still have a straight pull on the hook shank.

When I snell a hook the tag end points away from the line and when I tie a palomar the tag end points towards the line.

The only time I ever snelled an eel hook is when I tried those octopus hooks with the turned-down eye.

Nowadays, on the few occasions when I throw eels, I just use the old standby Mustad bronze in 6/0, and attach them with a palomar.

Snelled bait or circle hooks on eel leaders seems to make the eel run truer.

on ALL bait hooks, i snell me own

palomar for swivels and improved clinch for breakaway snaps

and i still go with the Albright when i tie direct.
what size weight you using to stuff eeeels with, Jim?

Turned down eyes
 

This is how you achieve a straight pull with a turned down eye, and the reason for snelling such hooks I thought.

Why snell a straight eyed hook and lose the straight pull ????

Palomar with heavy leader- why? Huge knot with a breaking strength far above that of the main line????

I only use snells because I like to snug a rubbercore right down to the hook eye, and the connection with the line is on the other side of the hook eye this way. With a palomar the weight would rub against the knot.

All palomar all the time.

Boy, I am so "Old School". Clinch knot for everything.

Snell all my bait hooks, enjoy doing it and the knot 100 percent if done right.

When I lived in Florida, snelling tarpon flies was a necessity ... much better hook set and more secure knot.

For striper fishing, not sure it's always necessary ... but it's a good knot for eel fishing as you get the straight pull.

All hook and terminal knots palomar simply because i can't snell for Sh$t. Main line to swivel Trilene knot. But i have wondered about the running truer aspect with palomar vs snelled......

Funny you mention that DZ....when my father taught me that knot, he said that was the only one I'd ever need....


Polamar mostly now, but when I actually take the time to sit and tie....I snell a few

but still use Clinch knots exclusively for Tautog, that's what I first learned it on, so I aint' changing a thing.

Snell always. In addition to whats been noted above about running truer etc, you also get a decent amout of chafe guard.

Main reason I haven't snelled much is that I like to re-tie a lot (usually after every fish), and the snell is more of a pain to cut and un-do from the hook, then re-tie. I believe that I can remove and re-tie a Palomar much quicker. Line stays in the water more often, and I trust that knot with everything except Trilene XT.

What about trebles when live lining pogies or scup? Still a snell to the treble hook (if you use the treble)?

I was taught my my father to use the clinch many moons ago and havent used anything else except a loop knot for teasers and dropper loop.

I go with an improved clinch. I use Palomar for main line (braid) to swivel in all cases but have had trouble with the Palomar in lb over 30. My usual leader is 40LB Ande mono, or sometimes flouro. I use the improved clinch on my breakaways when plugging as well. Main reasons for not using a snell is I have no practice with it, and I use straight eye hooks for eels.

With a lot of you saying the Palomar on everything, maybe I should go try it again and tie up a few leaders.
