At least two surfers were taken to Southampton Hospital on Friday afternoon with severe bites to their feet, and several others in the water suffered less serious bites to feet and hands from feeding bluefish near Sagg Main Beach in Sagaponack.

Witnesses said that at least one of the surfers was bleeding heavily from his foot and may have lost a toe as a result of the fish bites.

“There was a lot of blood,” said surfer Zachary Ducak. “They had it wrapped up very heavily.”

Two ambulances were called to the beach, and lifeguards ordered all swimmers out of the water at one point.

The bluefish were drawn to the area in large numbers by schools of bunker, a prey species about the size of a human foot, that were blown into the surf zone by Thursday’s storms, which also caused the large waves that attracted surfers to the area. Thousands of the baitfish died on Thursday afternoon after being chased onto the beach by predator fish.

Half-way thru the article I said to myself - hey, feeding bluefish, no wonder the dim-wits got bit...:laughs:

Had it happen to me many moons ago in FLA swimming near Palm Beach...saw gulls hovering along the shore, getting closer and closer, then baitfish zipping by all around me in the water and then the big dark shapes like torpedoes...:shocked:

Never swam so fast before or since to get out of the water...I looked like Johnny Weismuller with a wake behind me...:hihi:

Severe cuts??? I've seen plenty of paper cuts that look worse than that guy's foot :grins:.
