which line
 

I am looking to add a quick desent fly line to my bag. I have a 8/9 wieght Redington fly rod that I am going to use it on. I was wondering what grain head (325, 425, or 525) should I be looking for? Also what type of running line (floating or Itermidiate)? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know much about grains, but I like the sinking line over the intermediate or floating, I can cast quite a bit further with the sinking line too.

from your post it looks like your looking for a shooting head,but if your looking for a wf fly line superfast sinking I use the cortland 333 #6 superfast sinking line (61/4 in sec) you should be able to pick one up for $25.oo.nice line i wish they made it in a 10wt.

FISH14, COUPLE OF QUESTIONS, the redington you have sound like it 's a REDFLY 8/9. if it is. do NOT over weight the rod you will NOT have good action, 250gr, if PERFECT for that rod,next, are you fishing from the beach or off the rock up there, an what depth if the water you are fishing. an are you fishing RIPS. everything MAKES a BIG difference in what gr, line you will use,:confused: :confused:

Yes it is a redfly. I will be fishing of both shore and boat but more boat. I am looking at some very heavy rips to fish this line in. I was using a corland 6-7 IPS sinking line last year and it worked OK but was looking to impruve on performance this next year. I was look at two types of line, both cortland. One had an itermitedate running line and the other had a floating running line. I was leaning toward the intermediate.

When I fish from shore I fish on rocky points mostly. Some sandy beches but I was not going to use this line to much on the beach. I have had good luck on the beach with intermedate in the rivers and marsh. Most of the ocean front here is rocky.

Is 250gr heavy enough for most fishing? I was leaning toward 325gr. Is that going to be to heavy for my rod? I know I should have a bigger rod but it is so much fun on light tackle.

I also have a 7 wt. rod I use sometimes in early season when the scoolies first show. Could I use the 250gr on that also? It is a slower action than the Redfly.

FISH14, I would NOT use a 350 on that rod. eeeeespecily on a BOAT you need a 10wt on a boat, you NEED LIFTING POWER. an a 10 will give it to you. Ive see alot of 9ns brake w/guys lifting them.IF you do use a 9, take your TIME LIFTING, let the rod flex an come back befor re-flexing it.SLOWLEEEEEE.
go w/ this rule 6 ' of water intermidate
over 6' sink tip 200-250gr
deepwater heavy sink 350-450gr
to get the flys DOWN
float-line is your call, if you like top water action, an the fish are there HIT'EM w/ float. that's about it any outher questions Ill be around. as far as manufactures go
Ive used AIRFLO, TEENY'S for a LOOOONG TIME. NO problems YET.

Thanks for the info. I will get the 250 gr. I don't think I will need any more than that based on what you said about depth. I will be fishing this line in 10-20ft of water, varries by tide alot.
