A good surfman died last night

Just got a note from RIRockhound that Ollie (Russ Olivo) died after a long courageous battle with the Big C.

You RI surf guys may not know him by name but if you fished the mouth of Narrow River, Ollie was a fixture there. Big bushy handle bar 'stash.

A Nam vet who served his country proudly.

I was with Ollie one night in October, probably 1999 or so when he caught and released 3 fish all of which were over 50" long. We never carried a scale so we never knew what they weighed but they had to be all high 40s and low 50s. Ollie rarely killed a fish, especially a big girl.

RIP old soldier:bc:

Wasn't many nights between midnight and 5a you wouldn't run into Ollie there....

Someone who learned the value of all life somewhere along the way. I suspect he appreciated his more fully as a result......and got the most out of it. RIP, indeed.

He was a GREAT guy to fish with. I spent hundreds of hours with him over the years. I remember one December night it's about 9 degrees and we are fishing the Great Island Bridge for Shad. 9 friggin' degrees and I'm laughing so hard I'm crying and the tears are freezing on my face.

he says "we got to be nuts! It 9 degrees and we are freezing our ass off for shad. You can't even eat the bastages". So I said "maybe we should try". Ollie catches a shad, kills it and piles up some drift wood right in the parking lot, lights a fire and cooks a damn shad on a spit.

He say "God Damn Iemma, we killed it, we are eating the f**^%$ thing. We did and it was awful but funny even now.
He was just an easy going surf fisherman who loved to fish. He worked at Foxwoods in the later years and got off work at Midnight. We'd meet at 2:00 AM and fish till dawn.

Or standing on the bar on a warm august morning with Ollie, Pipe Scott, you and I catching schoolies and small fluke on needles having a grand old time... he was suspicious of my wetsuit and van stall, but we got along fine  He will be missed!

...and how many times did we catch him all alone in the back of the river.
Yeah, he never did understand your wetsuit but he liked you a lot and respected your fishing ability. He thought Eben was flat out crazy.

He was in Narragansett Surfcasters. You guys should maybe do something like a River Tourney for members only.
