Mackeral & Herring

Here is a question. Last season the mackeral were running at the exact same time that the herring run was in full swing. My question is could I keep a mix of mackeral and herring, together in a penn at my slip??????

I dunno about mixing, but have you had luck keeping macks alive in a pen?

For how long?

I am tempted to try it this season.

Van,
I never tried keeping the Macks in the penn, I always caught them and threw them into the livewell, or froze them for chunk bait.

yea same here, but it would be nice to have some live after the schools have moved on ...

I might give it a try, but I'm thinking the pen may have to be real big to support bigh fish like macks.

I think if you have a good flow of water over you bait cart, you may be able to keep mac's alive. They like a lot of Oxygen and cool water. If the water is more stagnant like deep in a marina...you may suffer some mac deaths. (I normally freeze them but I have not seen a lot of macs in a while)

i won't mind if you guys tell me where these herring and mackeral pens are going to be. hehehe

Kav:

Maybe somday I'll have a slip next to yours.!!!:D :D :D

Then you can have all the live macks you want ...

179 I.d be very surprized if the macks make it in a pen//////

Clamdigger:

I kinda agree with that, they are a fast swimming deep water fish
that may just croak in a pen.

But,,,
How about in a (cut in half) 55 gal drum with pumped seawater?
So that it creates a small "current" in there??

Mr. Kav 01-31-2003 12:14 PM

Hey van how about we keep a few slips vacant between us and have a huge pen for the macs. we might need some sabaki rigs and fish for them all over again though. hehehe

Clammer 01-31-2003 12:21 PM

I just think they need too much air & I agree with the speed they swim at , I,ve had trouble keeping them alive =just after jigging them up, they only luck I have had is with a very large oval tank =pumping alot of water thru ////
