A sad day for the Nation..
We lost the Space Shuttle Columbia today.
A very sad thing to watch. Brought back memories of the Challenger. Makes you realize just how much we take life for granted...and just how precious it realy is.. |
This is very sad. Say a prayer for the families of the 7 crew.
The footage shows the Shuttle breaking up 40 miles over Dallas as the shuttle was coming in for landing 16 minutes later in Florida. Apparently NASA lost radio contact and then the images & reports started coming in about the explosions and trails of the breakup. These were very brave people going up into space and they should be remembered that way. I remember too well when the Challenger exploded. |
this is a very sad day !! Lets Pray for them brave souls .
God Bless them !! |
:(
Our thoughts and prayers to them and their families. |
Was just watching this on the Today show.
Very sad and unbelivable :eek5: God Bless all and god bless america. :( :( Is it still "up there" or did it come down yet? I keep seeing images of it in the sky but at 12,500 mph it should be down already Mike |
It's tragic!
Like others, I sadly remember the day when we lost the Challenger as well. They have been asking for $$$ for new shuttles for years now. Prayers go out to those onboard and their families. |
My shoulders are sunken and my heart is aching....being an engineer, this hits me especially hard, thinking "What if....."
I only hope that the world can keep it's sanity as to the possibilty of terrorist implications (which I HIGHLY doubt), or we are in for a whole lot more horror.....:( |
I know this is of topic but-
If any of you guys have digital cable or Sattleite TV turn to the "NASA" channel- Up to the minute news straight from Nasa itself. Is it schedualed to inpact or is it going to totaly disinigrate above the earth? this is terrible and 7 very brave lives are obviously lost in this wicked sad event :( Mike |
Steve - I can't see how it would be possible for a terrorist to have any involvment in this. The shuttle was flying at 12 thousand miles per hour when it exploded and there is nothing remotely available to a terrorist that could intercept that.
There was mentioned two weeks ago that when the Columbia lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center that a tile or panel had impacted a wing causing some damage but they thought it would not be an issue. There are potential hundreds or thousands of other possibilities too, from a bad valve to damage from debri in space. But a terrorist even is very unlikely. SSX - it broke up 40 miles up and the parts have scattered from Texas thru Louisiana. They are finding debri over a very large area. All the parts of any weight that were up there should be down by now. |
John, I know that and agree whole-heartedly.....let's just hope that everyone else does as well....we all know how imaginations can run wild unnecessarily.....
|
Very upsetting and disturbing news :(
A terrible tradgedy 17 years after the last time. It reminds me of the Saturday that JFK Jr. died and it was all over the news that day. It's too bad they didn't take a look at that damaged wing:( America sure is getting their share of sad events lately. God bless their souls on that mission. |

|
I Am 100 % serious and there is no jokes or cute smilie faces about it::
I just wanted to say that upon entry of this site seeing the new picture. That picture is needed and the way John put it really sums it all up, Though we cannot ever know how the familys of these 7 souls feel, we as americans have a painful whole in our hearts for our brave space heros who spend there lives trying to make life here on earth better. this is most sad because it was Just 16 minutes to a safe earth landing. There Familys, Friends and fellow Workers were awaiting there arival only to hear this unthikable news that something so odd had happend.......I hope non of us ever have to feel that sort of 'emptieness' and Emotianal pain. I just hope they didn't feel anything and it was quick and peaceful. they died doing what they loved and they are forever remembered for there bravery and tragic untimely deaths. I hope they find the cause and make sure another 7 people have to go like that ever again. You know 6 of them were married? 5 of them had kids? What a shame.....I hope they set up a fund for the familys not only for the money, but for the comfort to know that we all grieve with them. I just had to vent and i hope you all feel somewhat the same as i do. (i'm getting all watery eyed now, i have to stop.) Thanks, Mike |
PS:
MrMacey, Very nice picture- thanks for the new wallpaper. mike |
It was a sad day. The skills and talents of those pilots were among the best in the world. I was stunned watching it.
Proud to be an American and a strong supporter of the US space program.... |
Same here...
SSX - well said. |
