One could only hope when they die that they could have had as full a life of service as this guy did. No matter what people say about the guy he did do alot for this country.

You can't say he hasn't fought for MA during his reign.

I sense this thread needing to be moved to the Political Section at some point.

He was very good at getting federal funding for the CCNS, herring runs and other public recreation areas. He also worked at keeping public access to the water in coastal areas.

You're right on about that. I was never a fan of the man himself, but he did some good things politically for the residents of our state. My father used to run into him down the Cape while walking his dog and says Kennedy would always stop and say hi and pet the dog. Not that you judge someone on a few brief chats, but my dad said he was a likeable guy.

My parents said the same about him running into him in Hyannis or on the Vineyard. Never afraid to say hi and pet the dog. He could have been just another rich douche and ignored people, but he didn't.

He was always in Hyannis and Nantucket for the Figawi, always pleasant walking the docks and one year gave us his guest mooring for the night when we were about to set anchor behind the outer harbor mooring field.

He was a nice guy, sailed, loved the ocean. You can't fault him for that.

"The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die."

I met the guy once many years ago while doing a job at the Boston Herald. That handshake always stayed in my mind.

Raven 08-26-2009 12:11 PM

yep

i met him as a kid along with Bobby Kennedy and he was very nice indeed. i had not read anything about his help
on the herring.... thanks Fishbones for mentioning that...

He helped hundreds of people--maybe thousands--across this Commonwealth without any hint of publicity or fanfare. Unlike our junior Senator, Press Shot Kerry.

He was Massachusetts' version of "Senator Pothole" (Alphonse D'Amato), but in addition to constituent service, he also had a national and world view. Agree with it or not.

Nantucket Lightship pulled into Hyannis.

Kennedy and the Vineyard

It is interesting to note that after the Chappy travesty was done with legally I don't believe Ted ever stepped foot on the island. Twice I have seen him moor his boat at the public dock in front of Mad Martha's in years past and not get out of it. His friends went off up the street and brought sandwiches back to the boat and all went off thier merry way. This was during the time he was dating some babe that was in a soap opera. She had long auburn hair, curly/frizzy. The other time he was with just one guy who did the same thing. Went and bought food and they left. Both times I made prolonged eye contact and nodded, and he nodded back.

Once many years before he and members of family pulled into the harbor and asked to dock a sailboat at the EYC dock, and the members refused to let the irish catholics get off after mooring thier boat. They told them to go somewhere else. I was told by someone who knows that the slight was never forgotten.
