Patience. Get good at the simple things before you move on.

Buy a good blank to build on. Don't figure since its your first rod you will buy a cheap blank in case you mess up. The rod will come out well and after putting in all the work , you will be disappointed if you start with a poor blank.

I too am in the frame of mind to try rod building myself . Take a look on ebay or half.com for "rod building " . I just picked up fiberglass rod building ( a good beginner book ) and the advanced custom rod building both by Dale Clemens . Im going to start off by reguiding a penn rod I use for party boats .

Thanks for the replies folks!

I am not sure what blank we will be using. The course includes a 7' spinning rod kit. Whatever it is... I'm just looking forward to getting away from the computer and doing something fishing related until the water warms up!

Cheers,
Rob

Run

Run away fast!!! I did one for fun and you no what I can't stop!!:smash: It is like a sickness. You will build and build and build till you go crazy. So again Run away as fast as you can to a rod builder near you and buy one, you won't be sorry

Agree with Saltheart, don't buy a cheap blank and guides, I'm still fishing the first Lamiglass graphite rod I ever built. In fact I stripped it down from spinning a few years back, because it was always a tad too heavy for my freshwater uses and built a conventional out of it. It's now my primary freshwater spinnerbait rod and I'm so much happier with it. I wouldn't have gone to that trouble with a lesser blank, but I would with the Lami. Go with Fugi Hardloys and you will be very happy.

Hey Guys,

Went to the first class last night and just thought I'd let ya' know we are using a 7' Rainshadow blank. (Forgot to bring the model # / specs.) Rough night last night! :sleeps:

Thanks again for the feedback (and the JPEG's)! I'll post a pic of my disaster when I'm done! ;)

Cheers,
Rob
