Okuma update
 

Got a call from Okuma today. I had sent them my Metaloid MDS-60 spinning reel, as it had not held up, and Kay's wouldn't service it. (Not to mention that they had sent me the wrong bail arm replacement part)

It seems as though the Metaloid wasn't designed for anything but FRESH water. They are replacing it with an Epixor EFS60, which he said was the same reel in a painted aluminum body. He also is sending my Metaloid's handle back with it, as the Epixor handle is a two piece that has a tendency to fold?!?! And my Metaloid spools will fit it, giving me more capacity than what comes with the Epixor.

I am satisfied with this development, as I really liked the reel before it broke down. Says something for their customer service anyway. I will update on how well the replacement holds up in August, since that is when the MDS broke down.

I tried to talk my little bro into buying one for the old man for Xmas; he couldn't find one and got a Penn 6500 instead. I yelled at him some, but now I feel like a big jerk.

As soon as I got the call, I went to the web site www.okumafishing, to check out the Epixor line. Then back to the Metaloid to compare, and what do you know, they tacked on "fresh water" anglers to the very last line....

So you guys that fished with me, whadya think I should add to the reel inventory? Got very good input from JohnR, and am leaning towards the Abu he recommended.

Just emailed Okuma service dept. No clicker sound from the drag when fish takes line. Ball's in their court AGAIN............

That's three strikes in my book. Gonna look at Penn Slammers and Nautil yellow. pissed

Not for nothing,but just the name "okuma" hints at cheesiness.
Go for the Slammer,you won't regret it.Trust me.The Slammers are
fine,fine reels.I've only owned my 460 for a week and I know that's not enough time to prove squat.But the quality and feel of the reel tells me with a little regular care(freshwater rinse)its gonna outlive me.Others have had theirs much longer than I have and I've never heard any complaints.

:bounce: I love my Penn Slammer 460, you give up a little in the weight dept. but the performance is worth the tradeoff. I know I will have this reel for quite awhile.:uhuh:

No clicker sound when a fish takes drag is a plus in my eyes. No one else can hear it either. May keep you from being "mugged"

I haven't heard much good feedback on Okuma reels in general.

I purchased an Okuma Coronado CD-50 last year instead of a Shimano Baitrunner 4500. I saved about $50 and the reel has been great. I probably don't use it as much as some of you guys use your gear, but for the money I've been pleased.

I'm looking to add a smaller spinning reel to my collection and I will certainly consider Okuma again.
