nice, I always enjoying reading your skishing stories and appreciate all the responses to the questions.

Well Done, Jake!!!
:claps: :claps: :claps: :claps: |
Thanks guys. She was a happy fish when I set her free. It would have been nice to weigh her, but it was not worth killing such a magnificent beast for that. At 58" with a nice belly, I can only imagine what that scale would have read...... Hopefully she'll live long and see a few more spawning seasons before I see her again. :)

awesome...even better on the release...
|
Congrats on a great fish

Congrats on the catch.
As an aside, ran into some of your club members recently. Please tell them that the area they were at this past weekend needs to be respected and walking on the lawns and using lights is going to ruin the good thing that is there. A word of advise and a friendly heads up. |
A lifetime of good fishing Karma !
Your act of sportsmanship and resource stewardship will be repaid many times over.
:gh: PS Just how does one measure a 5 footer while bobbing in the water? |
I was wondering the same thing on how to measure a huge fish like that while both of you are literally moving in the water.
|
Jake has to have benchmarks on the rod (i.e, 30, 40, 50 inch). I know I do. Great fish and great release, once again Congrats.
|
Good question, lol. It wasn't easy :) If I was a shorter guy than my 6'3" it would have been even harder.
She was very docile after I got my hand on her jaw, so I got underneath her so she was laying flat on my belly and legs, tail fork touching the top of my boot, nose on my chest. Laid my rod next to her with the butt also touching the top of my boot. Her nose was exactly one palm width from my first guide. I measured that distance on the rod after I got back to the truck. I've done this before with other fish, and am confident that the measurement was as accurate as if she were lying on the beach. If anything, the slight bow in her tail would have caused her to measure a bit shorter than she actually was, but that was good enough for me. |
congrats!
|
That sounds like some hardcore and extreme measurement.

awesome

I'm not going to criticize anyone for releasing or keeping a fish but that fish would be hanging from a scale if it was me. I would have to know the lbs. It would bug me if I didn't. Claiming to catch a 58" fish is going to generate some discussion. |
Nice catch - would have liked to have seen that situation - weighing a biggun like that in the water floating around ... hats off to you for catching and releasing the thing.

These charts are pretty handy for recreational fishing and a quick guied line for bragging rights,I feel the best way for true accuracy is to weigh it in at a weigh station with a certified scale, but in this case she was released so from here on out it's all speculation and what ifs.
The chart are based on average fish length, weight & girth, the number of fish that were used in this survey is also averaged up to help the making this chart, I truly don't know when this chart was last updated but I don't think it's up to todays bass standard weights. As and example I caught a 49.5" fish the minimum weight is 44# she was only 40# I have caught countless fish that fall short of the charts. I hear what your saying, a fish of that size and how it was measure is kinda questionable but if this is how he's been doing it and believes it's accurate then I believe him. If I was to catch a fish that size I don't know what I would do.....I would be at a tough cross road. 5/0 |
The only one it should really matter to is him since he was resigned to let it go. Great fish even if it was plus or minus a couple inches. I'd have to guess well over 60. Congrats.
