tog challenged

i have never had a good day of togging. i don't target them all that often but would if i had more success. will someone throw me a bone when the bite gets good. either my boat or yours. it would be great to spend a day w/ somone who's good at them. i always seem to get alot of bait stealers or get dragged into the structure. i've done the party boat thing for them and hit buz bay a few times w/ poor results. i've caught some nice ones outside boston harbor while chunking for bass. thanks, paul

fresh live crabs. big sharp hooks and heavier tackle than you think you need. set the hook earlier than you think, those bait stealers may be blackfish.... don't be afraid of deeper water too...

They are starting to show at the WHOI pier according to my bud who works there and drops lines down pretty much every lunch hour, small ones but fish none the less.

I was out on Saturday Toggin with my Dad and got a lot of small ones and a big monkfish with black sea bass mixed in.

Was in Upper Buzzards Bay in and around the rockpiles/lobster traps anchored in 25' of water.

Crabs for bait. The ones cut in half worked the best. I'll expect that when the water gets cooler/colder, the fishing will get better.

I'll admit that tautog is one of, if not the best tasting fish outside of cod and haddock.

I don't think it gets good until late Oct, early Nov. I'll PM you some info on a spot that's best done by boat (within casting range w/ a long rod but you'd rip off reeling it back in)-:

For hooking, swing for the sky when you get a nibble...half crabs, sharp hooks, get a few cranks in before they dive for bottom :-)

my .02 on tog hook set. 'Lift first' then set. In lifting you'll either feel weight or not, if so then a firm hook set. Soft action composite rod works best. Lota guys think they need to cross the fishes eyes, NOT true.

Please do, Paul. I'll be going at least one day every weekend (weather permitting) from 10/15 until 12/1

niko 09-29-2009 04:32 PM

well drag your old buddy paul out and we'll bloody up your rig. i ho'ed my way onto buzz's boat for fri for tuna. i'll let you know how we do

PRBuzz 09-29-2009 04:40 PM

I hoping Niko does a really bloody job on Friday on my boat!! I'll take tuna blood not his or mine all over the boat anytime. Nothing a power washer can't handle.

Just shows how desperate I am for a 1st mate for the Fall, my son is too busy working (AIDS Research at Beth Israel Hospital), taking MBA classes and traveling to Europe to GO FISH! And I thought I had instilled the right values in the kid?
