This is my friend Chris. Introduced him to the canal this summer. This was his third trip, landed this one on a rigged eel about an hour after arriving this past weekend. . Released apparently unharmed evidenced by the vigorous thrash of the tail on her way back. Measured exactly 50" tip to tail (un-squeezed). It didn't occur to measure girth until she was released, but likely weighed somewhere in the 40 lb range. No giant belly, but well proportioned. Fish another 19 or so hours with just a few small bass and a toothed bastage, but this one made it worth the drive and sleeplessness.

We have discussed several times in the past that neither of us had the need to keep a big fish if it wasn't hurt. There were a few minutes where I couldn't find the camera and he was holding the fish in the water reviving it. If I hadn't found it, he would of had a bit of decision on his hands, but I still think he would have released it. Definitely some fretting on his part while I looked in my bags for the camera. "Dude, we might have to eat this thing" :devil2:.
