Goin' to Block for 3 nights.........
 

Never been there before, what should I bring and where should we concentrate our efforts? I was thinking of just loading up the bag as if I was walking out to Naps, but I dont wanna miss anything :)

Where? SW point, Black Rock, The Snake Hole, SE Light, The *&*t Chute, Dories Cove, Cow Cove, Charlestown Beach, the Channel, Gracies Cove. Stay away from the North Rip. You can't reach the fish and you will get killed trying. More guys have died trying to fish the sandbar than anywhere else on the Island.
Be careful. This is not territory for the uninformed. Big water. Big rocks and big fish.

Block is a wonderful place,,The very end of Naps reminds me of the south side of Block,,,,, Basically there are fish there the hard part is finding them,,,, When you heading out,,,

Bring some cash for Club Soda just in case. Looks like you could get some pretty good wind and rain.

Ok in the event of Weather the Albion Pub... I can PM ya directions from Old Harbor... Now as far as fishing what to expect... Bowling balls covered in slime... Oh wait thats the beach.. Wind if they say 15 in forecast really expect 30... I saw the other posts about places.. DOnt forget guys the dump, charelston, beach Scotch beach, cresent and ballards and New Shoreham town beach... Oh WTF its an island man... Ok what to bring Needles, Eels, sluggos, spooks.... anything you may need like leader material, swivel ,snaps... common stuff I know sounds odd BUT John Swenton runs some odd hours at Twin Maples Tackle shop.. Ask him were has been good... As far as the north rip... Dont play there it really is not safe stay away from the rip fish from the beach the whole way up to it and on the other side (west) well good luck If ya need any more info PM me... Oh wait another good spot would be Seal cove... Too many places to fish there...

Piemma I remember you said once that ya almost cashed in your chips out there at North Rip. I looked at some pics of it last night, it seemed pretty docile, but that could have just been a nice day, how bad does it get and what makes it so bad?

All those spots are pretty much what I've been told, I guess ya just fish where ya can according to what weather your dealt, I'll figure em out:). I've read and re-read some of DZ's posts about the place and I think from what I've read I kinda get a good idea of where and when. The guy I'm going with fished it last week for the first time, and he caught a bunch of fish, so we at least have a place to start. I am so stoked to go, been casting towards that island for years now I get to stand on it:)

Going over Thursday AM. Now I gotta decide on 2 rods. Was thinking an Arra 1084 and a GSB1201L, but something is telling me to bring the 1205 instead of the 1201L. Recommends??

I use almost exclusively a GSB1201L there and have never had an issue but I am sure that others will tell you go with a heavier rod like a 1205 or a GSB1201M. I will be there this weekend but I don't know how much fishing the 3 1/2 month old will allow.

Dave the rip is dangerous Cause of the current and change of current... on top of the surf that can roll threw there with no warning... I am not a fan of the Arra rods have fished both gsb l and m blanks there.. The block is a great place but can be very dangerous with no warning.. If you go to the parking lot fo rthe North light/ rip area get out of the vehicle walk over to settlers rock and look to your left a little... If the water is moving your gonna notice the current goes in 2 different directions... There are lots of good places to fish Im sure you can find the fish... To find the Albion from old harbor come out of the parking lot take a right go around the 90 degree corner follow to stop sign at 4 way, proceed strait albion is across street from BI Grocery.. Great food there also.. Good luck and tight lines

I'm thinking the 1201L as well Steve, plenty of balls plus I can fish Pencils in the daylight with it, 1205 is a little one dimensional. I'm gonna take the 1084 in case we fish some of the not so big spots.

If you are interested in albies, bring something lighter for them.

There is a fine line between having a bass hooked or the bass having its way with you. Bring the heavier outfit. When I go to the island it's all business - plenty of gin mills back at home - this is big cow water - make the best of your time. The north bar can be very good but you need to be cautious as waves come at you in both directions - one second the water will be ankle deep and the next it will be up to your waste. IMO the north rip can be effectively fished from the dry part of the bar and much safer - don't linger too long if no action.
Don't forget a first aid kit with hook cutting pliers and drink plenty of water. One more thing... make an appointment now with your doc because after your trip you'll have a good chance of contracting block island fever. Have a great time.

we're gonna look at that North rip area, just a peak. I'm aware of my surroundings at all times and if it doesn't look or feel safe, I just keep moving to the next spot, no fish is worth dying for. Hell, there's some spots in SoCo that give me the willies, I cant fish like that. DZ sent ya a PM.

So I will not relive the whole story but it was 1989 and my friend Larry Tremblay and I are making a 1 day/night commando raid on the Island. First place we hit about 2 in the afternoon is the North Rip. There are 2 guys way out and they are landing bass in the 20# range. Now this was 89 remember so it was 36" minimum and 1 fish. We stared heading out on the bar and casting along the way. I hook up on a decent fish and all of a sudden I am sliding off the bar as the fish and the current and the wind is pushing me. The bar, way out, is maybe 5 feet wide and soft sand. 15 feet deep on both sides of the 5 foot sandbar. I clipped the fish off and drove the butt of an 11' white lami into the sand and just held on. 20 years dulls the memory a bit but I remember Larry trying to hand me the end of his rod for me to grab. It took me about 15 minutes to get back in, soaked in sweat and scared &^%$less.
We left and headed over to the other side of the Island and parked at Black Rock. About 1/2 an hour later the 2 guys who were out on the end came driving up to us. One of the guys had just his underwear on and was wrapped in a blanket. Seems that they were brothers and he had gotten swept off the bar and his waders filled with water. He brother was a Coastie and swam out and rescued him. We were all absolutely freaked out.
North Rip is just too dangerous for me to fish and I take calculated risks all the time. Much later that night we hammered big fish at SW Point.

Unreal dude. Coulda lost 2 guys that day counting the other fella. I had no idea that the water is that deep there :err:

The thing you need to realize, which I didn't at the time, is there is a 5 to 7 knot rip running over the bar. That day the wind was SW and the tide was incoming so we had 5 to 7 knots of rip along with a 20knot SW wind and soft sand. Fish the rocks! There are plenty of them. Just before you head out on the sand to the North Point there is a cove called Cow Cove. We use to meet up with a father and son who drove an old blue van and would park there all week. They had a lot of big fish out of Cow Cove including a 55# which I saw in1991.

Anybody got a pic of a map with the names of the spots on it? I googled it but just come up with a generic map of the island.

AND THATS WHY FOLKS THAT KNOW ME, KNOW I SAY WADERS ARE THE DEVIL.... Dave again go to Twin Maples ask john or if your looking for cow cove.. Drive to the parking lot for north light... The cove there from lot to rip is cow cove... As far as other spots.. West beach rd off corn neck rd is marked by a transfer station sign is "the dump" past the station to end bear left parkin lot there park and gives you a BIG area to fish... West side rd.. look for dories cove rd and graces cove rd on your right.. Charelston beach is off champlin rd past new harbor thats the coast guard station location further up rd.. outside old harbor to the north side you have cressent beach to clay head towards the top is scotch beach then opiste direction you have ballards the chute seal cove and then so on and so on.. lol

bring water, needles, and eels... enough eels for your stay... you'll pay more for everything on the island... If the fish dont want eels or needles on Block, they're not there!!!

North rip was empty that day, a little too nice maybe.

I may as well add my name to the list of guys who learned thier lesson on that bar.
I was out at the North Rip for the first time.I had been warned by Henry Hetu.
I waded out to about the distance in that picture.I was in water maybe a little over knee height.I was catching blues and bass,having a ball.Waves were coming in from both sides.Before I knew it the water was taking my feet out from under me.I lost my balance,was upended by my air filled waders,regained my balance and got hit right in the chest by wave.
I managed to get back in.Wet and scared.I agree with all here.Never take this place lightly.
