Late season big fish stories
As a follow up to eelskimmer's delicately worded post , lets hear some late season big fish stories.
I can think of two RI big fish. One was a 63 pounder caught of an RI beach by someone chunking in the last week of November. A second one over 60 pounds (don't know exact weight) was taken off another RI beach further west by a Lady on Dec 1. I saw the 63 pounder in the flesh and I saw a picture of the lady with the second 60 pounder. I know of many more from Montauk and block Island. In the last week of November there are schools of blitzing fish that cover acres off the tip of long island. The big ones tend to lag behind so sometimes the last fish caught are huge. I also caught my biggest bluefish ever in late November. These fish (we caught many) were 22 to 23 pounds after gutting. heads the size of footballs. What abll popping for those monsters in broad daylight and seeing them busting on the surface. We always fished through Thanksgiving weekend and occasional 1 week into Dec. I can remember freezing my nuts of at Burlingame Campgrounds into mid October and then renting rooms at the Blue Marlin motel in Charlestown (Axtually rented there many years while it had a different name I now forget--low price but very moldy smell off season) and at the Sand Dollar in Westerly (very nice place that gives fisherman a discount). One thing to remember....if the water is forming frozen slush as in comes off the line while running over a guide , there are big fish out there!! Every avid fisherman has shoved his cold hands down his waders into his crotch to warm his hands up now and then. You keep fishing until when you shove your cold hands down your waders to warm them up and your #^^^^& is colder than your hands. That's when its time to quit!! :) |

Personally know of 3 good pals 50 's which were caught on the outer cape after halloween. Wasn't tony stetzko's 73 nov 13.
I always felt the really BIG fish left a little later than the rest. Just a few hardy lunatics chasing them. |
Nov. 3rd 1981 nauset beach fishing a live eel with a teaser, 73 pounder ate the teaser. Tony Stetzko Jr.
Latest ever for me for anything large would be this time of year. |
