New 6.25" Cowboy
3 Attachment(s)
I have wanted to make a 6 inch Cowboy with a curved slopehead for the past 2 years but was not happy with the curve obtained with a rounded rasp. I decided to first cut the slopehead on the band saw and then use a 2 inch rotary sanding attachment (Clesco @Woodcraft) on the DP. It works well.
The finished plug weighs in at exactly 2.5 oz and has a 0.2 oz (3/8 diameter) chin weight and a 5/16 x 1inch tail weight. Cut 4/0 treble and I dressed a 5/0 Siwash with marabou, crystal flash, and yellow puglisi fiber. I used a web picture of a Fixter cowboy as my visual model and eye balled it as I turned the body. Rattle can painted and the black lateral line spots were spotted with a paper clip end with trusty Rustoleum black. I hope it will dive to 1-3 feet with medium retrieve with the pikie 3 lip. chris |

Thanks for the feedback on my Pikie... so is a cowboy basically the same shape with a sloped forehead without the curve? Can some one post a picture of a 6-7 inch Cowboy...
thanks- chris |
Nice pikie!
Cowboy is similar shape though the face is sloped rather than cupped. Search on Beachmaster cowboy and you'll find some. Weighting of the two plugs is also different. Pikie usually has a shot of lead in the chin while the cowboy has two shots in the belly. Jigman |
heres a cowboy that I made for reference, I think its 6" long.
Runs really deep! Others might have their own methods, but I found that it worked the best with a standard pikie3 lip, and 2 belly weights, I think I did one at halfway back, and one just behind that. Will float at rest, but quickly gets down on retrieve. Using only one belly weight will keep it right on top, similar to a standard pikie action. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...4/DSCN1764.jpg |
thanks for posting your cowboy pic go4broke I will be making a few this winter and will use your weighting scheme

i have a diagram somewhere detailing all the dimensions I used, If I can find it I will send it to you.
