repainting plugs
As I sit in the man cave looking at 5 gallon buckets full of old wooden plugs, mostly gibbs. And with all the nostalgic plug talk lately, I 'd like to restore some of them.
So is it ok too use a certain type of paint remover over another ? Or do I have to hand sand, tried that already takes forever. A plug building pal of mine will re paint if I strip them down to bare wood. |
Just fish em'! Too much work to refinish them!:fishin:
|
Just sand off the loose paint and spray a coat of primer over them.....then Paint.
That should be fine |
Old plugs like antique furniture retain
value if unfinished and unpainted. One of best wooden plugs I ever fished had no paint on it and developed a kind of fuzz that would seemed to attract SB over new plugs. Beats me why?? |
Try a heat gun it might take the paint off with little sanding,,, Personally,,, I would pick the ones you want to keep and fish the rest...
|
if they 're not rare or collectable why not restore them? you'll learn in the process....i've got some beat up lc coopers that i plan on refinisning ah style for the heck of it over the winter.

I only have a few plugs behind glass.
Anything I redo is to fish with. The plugs have a fair amount of chips and dings, right down to bare wood. I have a pile of fluorescent orange pencils, I would't mind making a more natural color. For example. |
Bobby, look through/search the plug building forum.
