Who rules boaters or surfcasters?
 

We all know boaters rule because we catch the cows and we just look good behind the wheel. What say you, night dwelling, sandy, wet, surfcreatures?:laughs:

Like bringing a knife to a gunfight! Who are the best boaters? The ones that are great surfcasters of course :D ...

Sure, boating has an edge in size and frequency but successful surfcasting is truly more challenging and more rewarding in my opinion. A true case of man -v- nature & the fish and at the same time man with nature & the fish... That's my story & I'm sticking to it!

its not the boat of all boats but it works.
but i think the surfcaster has the bragging rights. like john said the boater has alot more options/mobility but give me a fish off the beach and you can bet i feel more pride in that fish than any fish i ever caught off a boat. i bought a boat with a fellow sb member in the middle of the last striper season with BIG hopes of landing the trophy. well that didn't happen. After we called it a season for the boat i learned of a surfcasting "hotspot" and experienced the best fishing i've ever had. so in short ill say the surfcaster owns the show and deserves the right of way

Most of my early big fish came from the surf, in fact both 40's in my office came off Pegotty Beach in Scituate. Then there is something about being on the water, not just in it and I like them both. For me it's the fact I've been in some sort of sailboat or powerboat since I was in high school. Something flashes back, sets the same brain paths firing, when I'm on that first morning run as I push the throttle down as I clear the harbor entrance. Love the salt air in my face and the solitude which normally accompanies me those first few hours.

And of course I love all that "easy boat fishing", because we boaters are of course clueless and them cows just line up to climb aboard:).

Boats take us to the fish, while you surf people sit and whine that they are to far out to cast. I say bo-hoo and have a nice walk back to your lonely fishless truck.. ;)

also we still have to catch the bastards once we find them.

depends on who is behind the wheel,Boating turned into work for Me But had great times and a few games trying the dont follow Mw stuff, I fished woods hole mostly at nigh and even in the fog. ventured Up the side of the islands and learn most the stuff to fill the boat and deal with selling the Bass.
fished MV very hard allso and fished of of monomoy and all rips near it. have not owned a boat since 98 I think
Had a Big boat rigged for tuna and could run 7 rods.
the fuel killed me but being up in the tower was cool;)
sold the JIANT HOLE and bought a grady white with 40 hrs on a merc 200. worked the piss outa that boat. use to love squibby and the south side.
lot of Guys out there didnt have it together just as on shore and pulled My share out of the rocks including a dragger.
Use to dig the bonito thing that was good....

I will say when I fish from shore I find much more savy fisherman & not tooooomany a/o compared to what I,ve seen of 45 years on the water, especially the yahoos that have 20,30, -100 g,s go buy a boat & a 6 pack and are clueless/////////////

piddled myself laughing so hard!!! ...yep a whole ocean for the boaters and how many times have I been on the beach at 3:30in the morning and as soon as there is a peep of light someone in a boat flies out of no where to fish the same spot I am fishing from shore!????

its not an easy game ive tried it, climbing over rocks,up and down cliffs,socks soaking wet, seeing the most fish all season busting 200 yds out in front of you, and cant be reached if i had a 20ft rod, THE WHOLE TIME SAYING TO MYSELF I PUT THE BOAT AWAY TO EARLY!!!:smash:
now i give the boaters there credit high and dry, can fish numerous spots in one day without getting tired, oh and if you do get tired crawl in and take a nap, if its freezing out go inside, have your cooler right beside you,have 5 different rods all set up ready to go with different gear, listen to classic music as you go out into the sunrise,look at fish finder to tell you if there here,be able to chase them with the turn of a key, and last but not least be able to pick up surf casters that want a day on the water!! :D ps i used to be a yahoo now im just inexperienced!

Duke - the successfull surfcaster doesn't go to where you need to cast 200 yds :) - Great thread!

Clammer - there is a incredible yahoo factor built into both boating and surfcasting, unfortunately - the imbecille in the boat has the ability to cause much more damage & mayhem over a greater area than the dimwit on the beach who effects far fewer and can screw up a relatively small place.

Sep-Nov : I would call it a draw, possibly leaning to the surf crowd

I have had better fishing from boats, I wouldn't say luck because the times I've had more fish I was with experienced fishermen who could show me the technique. I will say my time on boats have made me a better surfcaster.

I think the boat gives better mobility, there are many spots I would like to fish, but you gotta walk a couple of miles from where you park, with a boat you can make a few casts or drifts and move on.

Oh, I don't know, when the fish are there surfcasting rules.

In all honesty I have to admit this. I have caught bigger fish on the boat. But the best day of fishing I have ever had was on a stone jetty at Scarborough beach. Caught dozens of schoolies and two keepers. this was last November. As I walked away I was thinking that these fish cost me a fraction of what they would have on the boat and I felt like I earned them, all wet and sandy, waves crashing into me. Plus I took my son to Charlestown got into a bluefish blitz and had a ball. He was much more comfortable along the beachfront. However I do love the feeling of pouring on the power and screwing out the bay at 40 knots. Going as close to clammer as I can..full bore baby:laughs:

Good winter debate !!!!!

Last year was a little slower than I hoped for - Biggest fish I had last year was 28 pounds from the surf - not bad but not what I expected and 22.1 pounds lighter than I'd hoped for.

I had close to ten fish between 25 and 28 pounds that were surf caught. My biggest boat fish of the season landed was 22-24 pounds or so.



Well, just levelling the playing field :D

I'd always choose to be on a boat, but its hard to top the feeling of a keeper in the dark on a 10ft rod when the waves are breaking at your feet.

Oh yea.,....... thats what I,m talkin bout !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention good access to getting live bait.
Then being able to take the bait where you want in minutes.

Happy are those who know how to fish both worlds. Then comes having the time to do it. I'ld rather fish from shore 3-4 nights a week then boat once or twice during the weekend. I think most die hards surf casters would love to own a boat and still surf fish. Where the fish swim is where I wanna be;)
