Jet JWL 1220 lathe and duplicator opinions

Anyone know much about these? Most of the reviews I've read are very positive on the Jet products. Going to be placing an order today.
Also, I was recommended a Vega duplicator as an add on device...any opinions on this setup?

I would say that is a real good combo. Hell of a lot better than what I use. The Vega is pretty much the standard for most plug builders duplicators if that is what you want to do. Don't forget to see me about the carbide set up if you ever decide to go that way. I also have plenty of hand turning tools for the lathe if you need to borrow some to get started. They are just sitting gathering dust. You are in deep now:smash:

back beach is making plugs?? You do know that you have to sign a no-eel waiver for you to continue down this road right??

I actually looked up Vegas and they were all $700-$1000, so I'm obviously looking at the wrong model#'s.
Which model is the one you showed me last week?

I was in Sears ordering the lathe because I got a bunch of gift cards...so I'm chatting with the floor rep and he asks me what I'm making with the lathe...apparently plugs aren't the only fun things you can turn as I discovered the local smoke shops pay well for expertly turned pipes...:smokin:

If I mess up on a plug(a certainty) I'll simply convert it into something else...
I mean, its already gonna be drilled and all, so why throw it out?

Nebe 12-29-2009 02:59 PM

dude.. your talkin to a glass blower.. I know all about pipes :hihi:

Tagger 12-29-2009 03:39 PM

Mike,, I went thru all that last year and came to the conclusion the Turncrafter VS was the best bang for the buck and should be considered .. If your pockets are a little deeper check out the new Turncrafter "Commander".. Also I wouldn't buy that Vega dupe without talking to Mike (at M&D's). The last version of that dupe had some bone head designs in it and Mike had to re design it himself ,having special parts made to keep it going .. Talk to Mike .. If you get into plugbuilding you'll be spending time down there ..

I think I need to get my car washed.

stripermaineiac 12-29-2009 07:12 PM

Damn I just spent 5 min watchin that wash job LOL. Look at Woodcrafters they carry them direct now from Vega.

i use the jet 1014 w/ vega and it is IMO as a beginner, a fine combination.

the jet 1220 is a little powerhouse, 3/4 hp same motor as its big brother and can turn plugs up to 20" :).

I Love My Vega....all I use now...don't free hand much anymore. and it shopuldn't run you more than $275...i got mine for $240 2 years ago.

I have the Turncrafter VS and just got the little dup PSI makes from Santa. Just started fiddling around with it and it looks like it will do all I want. Granted it takes time to make templates for it. Not really set up to use a plug as the template but if you have the skills and tools to make templates from sheet metal or Plexiglas it is a good little rig.

It's design has it's limitations. Seems like if I want to make anything over 8" I will have to modify it's table since the mount on the tailstock end looks like it will be in the way.

ProfessorM 12-30-2009 11:18 AM

The problem Mike has with the Vega's is an fairly easy fix if the problem arises. Don't forget Mike is making plugs commercially and uses the Vega to the maximize limits as far as quantity he is making. He probably makes more plugs in a single run period than Mike, BB, will make in a few years so i don't think the way Mike is going to use the Vega will cause him any grief. I know plenty of people that luv their units and to me it is the best way to go as far as the hobbiest is concerned. There really isn't that many options out there for the average Joe and in that price range. Just my 2 cents.

as far as the soapy mammary's ,

to quote Cheech and Chong " a biga ones a like a this , a boomba boomba"

Rockfish9 12-30-2009 12:48 PM
