Kennedy Center Honors/Dave Brubeck

Did anyone catch the Kennedy Ceter Honors tonight? It was a great show which featured Bruce Springsteen, Mel Brooks, Robert DeNiro and Dave Brubeck! The Dave Brubeck portion was phenomenal as they showcased his career and his music (never listened to it much but know a few tunes....I am gonna pick up a few CD's ASAP!) The highlight of the show I thought was the musical tribute to Brubeck which kicked into high gear when his 4 sons were introduced playing the music of their Father! Obviously gifted musicians in their own right Brubeck was so taken aback by their participation you could read his lips when he said "I will be God damned"...it was a beautiful moment and you could tell he was just as proud as he could be that his sons were up on stage playing his music in tribute! Great stuff!! I am looking forward to delving into Dave Brubecks music! Any fans out there? Do you have any album recommendations?

Saw the whole show... good tribute to all or them..

Time Out... start there.. think it was his biggest seller...

and ask JPI... he was/is a big Brubeck fan... think he even might remember seeing him once or twice too... :)

What a career that man had :claps:

I watched it , thankfully I have dvr so I could rewind in between going out to the shop to spray some doors, long day.

I thought the whole show was pretty good, some great tributes there.

luv that style of music. You won't be disappointed Lawrence. A real talent. Do you good the broaden your musical horizons and it will help you start to appreciate some other talented musicians like Mr. ZAPPA:uhuh:

There are some live albums around, too, with Gerry Mulligan joining the group on baritone sax. Browse YouTube for some solo sax videos featuring Paul Desmond.

How about that drummer on Take Five??!!!! Pretty awesome!!:uhuh:

Missed the show last night, but Brubeck was a cool guy in the days when
cool was truly cool. :)

Caught him in the Metropole in Manhattan in the early 60's and at the Newport
Jazz Festival. 60? There was a $2 cover charge at the Metroplole and you could just about touch the "Greats" where they played behind the baah. :D

Had all his music recorded on those old 8 inch reel tape recorders and on the old 78's.
Who knows where they are now or i could play them on Clammer's Victrola.

Clammah, you still using the same needle? :grins:

Did Mel Brooks do any comedy. Imho, the funniest comedian i ever heard. :hihi:

Joe Morello. Very good drummer--Brubeck played some pretty sophisticated ryhthms. The entire Time Out album is played in unusual time signatures-not your basic 12 bar blues in 4/4 time.

BigFish 12-30-2009 07:23 PM

I think Gene Krupa was awesome....I am a big swing fan and Have Benny Goodman on my Ipod along with Glenn Miller!:uhuh:

Joe Morello has some great chops !
A good sign of a great drummer, just watch how effortless his left hand is (right hand drummer)
Rich had arguably the greatest left hand of any right handed drummer ever !

BigFish 12-30-2009 08:40 PM

Ronnie I can't disagree with you there.....but Krupa was doing it years before Buddy Rich! He was a trail blazer of sorts! Your talking mid to late 1930's he was bangin' like nobody else! I remember the first time I saw Buddy Rich....it was on The Tonight Show w/Johnny Carson! I had never seen or heard of him before and this "old guy" sat down at that drum set and I was just bLOwN AwAY!!! He was amazing!

BigFish 12-30-2009 10:15 PM

Just downloaded Brubeck and his "Time Out" Legacy Edition 50th Anniversary with lots of never before released live songs! Also John Coltrane's Newport 63' album!:grins:

MarshCappa 12-30-2009 11:05 PM

Great Stuff! I missed the first hour but will look for it on demand.

RIJIMMY 12-31-2009 11:50 AM

hold on a minute here....is this Big Fish getting into JAZZ?
Larry, if you like Brubeck, this opens a WHOLE new world. I'm not a big fan of Brubeck but always liked Paul Desmond style a lot, beautiful tone on an alto. I really think there are a ton of people you would like much more. Knowing your love of EC adn SRV and blues based music, I think you need to send me your address again and I'll make you a mix that will convert you. Guaranteed.

ProfessorM 12-31-2009 01:41 PM

good luck. he is a hard sell

BigFish 12-31-2009 01:51 PM

My New Years resolution was going to be to listen to Frank Zappa......but after that comment.....I think not!:no2:

ProfessorM 12-31-2009 07:43 PM

LOL. What ? you are a hard sell.:uhuh: Not a bad thing . You like what you like. nutin rong wit that. Remember the couple big band jazz CD's I sent you a few years ago?

RIJ . I like Paul Desmond too

Karl F 12-31-2009 08:00 PM

zappa.. jazz from hell... night school

BFL... the video sucks..... but the music is cool...

even YOU might find it ...tolerable...:hihi:

justplugit 01-01-2010 11:35 AM

WTH???? Guess ya have to aquire a taste.

RIJIMMY 01-04-2010 11:51 AM

you need guidance BF!!! A lot of Jazz guys changed styles frequently. I am a HUGE Coletrane fan but would not reccomend his Newport 63. he starts playing "free" adn will really turn you off! Get Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" and "Blue Trane" by Coletrane - both amazing records featuring Coletrane. If you like those, get Giant Steps and Coletrane Jazz!

ProfessorM 01-04-2010 06:54 PM

i think i sent him kind of blue. he probably smashed it.

rphud 01-07-2010 08:35 PM
