Boston Harbor Herring
Hey, i know its sort of early to be thinking about stripers but i feel like it anyways. last year i saw some guys live lining herring. the only place i know where to get these herring is at the bait shop, but they're wicked expensive. ive caught herring before from my friends boat on sabiki rigs and tiny cast masters but where can i catch them from shore when they are running in the spring?
i normally fish around blacks creek and walloston and a few places close to there. |
i didn't think bait stores could sell live herring.
|
I think stores can keep them live and sell them too as long as they stay within the laws...
Christian, I know of very few people that get & keep live herring from a shop & they tend to pay dearly for it. 99% of the people you see with live herring get it themselves from a herring run or jigging... |
that was sort of my question, where would these herring runs be around boston? ive been to the one at the canal and heard of the one on the charles but im looking for one i could easily reach from shore that is close to the area im fishing.

Geesh I guess i will just go by myself. ;) Ok Christian, no car yet. When you go to Wolly fishing how do you get there? Don't you remember you, Sweetieface, Notaro, and I in the spring NutIsland .....
|
my transports and fishing buddies who go to wolly with me are my friend, my cousin, my dad.
now i understand what you ment about the herring thingy. i got confused. |
Ok I will give you firsthand info on where most of the guys you see probably get them. I will email you later.
|
Put me on the herring ring thing list to please. I dont think I ever fished with herring that was not frozen ...

What the hell you guys talkin' bout' ????????? Herring,,,,Wolly,,,,,,we got to talk........ Trade for a boat ride to bass land !!!!!! |
Talking bout getting and keeping herring alive. You got a live well on your boat right? ;)
|
Kind of. big cooler with an airater(sp)
if I ever get one boat fixed or a motor for the other. I will be fixed up good. anyone have a 100HP or so motor cheap?? ;} / al |
i am curious about this as well. are we talking by boat or shore. i have a live well on my boat and would love to fill it and fish them.
|
Livewell,,,,YES, .....
Have not got enough herring to put in there though. I can keep macks and pollack alive no problem..... This season I really want to try fishing live herring,:D Maybe build a pen at the slip too.. |
Kinda need 2 systems, one for the truck & herring run and the one in the boat. A lot of these runs would be real hard to pull up to with a boat in tow. Herring are also real delicate too so you need to get them quickly into a controlled livewell from the net or they'll die...
|
True John, but what I am hearing is that there are places to get from the boat.
Then into the live well they go, to get eaten laer by hungry bass. I have access to 55 gal drums, and could rig a pump in the back of my pick-up, but what a hassle that would be, and then try to get them to the boat still alive, I don't think its feasible. What we/I (ya know--"boaters") need is somewhere to get a bunch on the way out in the AM. |
i agree.
