But rhode island will be going forward with a saltwater liscense....

Email I received this morning:

"The House voted 59 to override and 10 vote to sustain the veto. The Senate voted 28 to override and 6 to sustain the veto. The RI rec salt water license is law! Thanks to all who made the effort to contact our Representatives and Senators."

Yup, I saw on last night's news that Governor Chooch went down in flames with the legislature over-riding a number of bills he had vetoed and wondered if the license was among them

Very good news. My brother-in-law and I were just discussing the headache of have to pay for a MA and RI license.

Anyone know what the effective date is?

This is good news. General Assembly actually accomplished something for once.

In any event, you won't need any license in Mass this year--our bill doesn't take effect until Jan. 1, 2011.

Are we mixing up terms: registration and license?

This year 2010 isn't everyone required to REGISTER with the Feds (no cost, since MA doesn't have a registration in place) and next year 2011 get a MA LICENSE ($10) or whatever state you reside?

Of course if you register with the Feds via other routes, like an HMS pelagic, you are also exempt.

In 2010 you still have to register with the feds which is free this year. Next year you will pay for a license in Mass, or pay the feds to register if mass does not get their crap in order

As I understand it, the license bill has been passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Coupe Deval. It goes into effect January 1, 2011.

If the RI license goes into effect this year, RI licensees won't have to register with the Feds.

In any event, I'm registered. It took less time to do that than it does to order something online from Bass Pro. If I decide to buy a RI license later, then all I wasted was about 3 minutes of my time. :huh:

This was pushed hard by RISAA. Steve Medirous asked all the members to call/email their Senators and Reps. There were literally hundreds of calls and emails made according to my Rep.

alright, here comes the stupid question...why is this a good thing? I know liscense fees often go to help manage fish and game...is that why people are for it?

So let me get this straight.......

I am from MA. I want to be able to fish in both MA & RI.

1.) Register with Fed's (which I have done)...FREE
2.) 2011 I will have to buy MA Saltwater Fishing License.
3.) 2011 I will have to buy a RI license as well?

I thought it was , if from MA and fishing in MA , you just register with feds. If from RI or MA and want to fish RI you need the RI license. If from RI and want to fish RI and/or MA , you need the RI license but do not have to register with fed. Next year , if from MA , you need the license and can fish MA or RI.

Way it was explained to me, RI would have reciprocity with CT and MA, so for one license you get two states at a minimum and if from RI you get three...

The fee is also supposed :rolleyes: to be lower than the fed one.

Mass. and CT will have universal reciprocity with any state that gives reciprocity to their licenses.

As I understand it, the General Assembly overrode Carcieri's veto of the bill they passed earlier in the year, and the fee was already set in that bill at $7, at least for residents.

Next year Mass will charge a flat fee of $10 for residents and non-residents alike. So far, the only state that won't have reciprocity with Mass. is NY since their reciprocity is limited to CT and then only on certain waters.

Partially correct, NY will not recognize a MA license, but NY also has reciprocity with RI on shared waters. (Don't ask me what the definition of "shared waters" is) just like they do with CT.

The fed registration required by MA residents will allow fishing in both states beginning in 2010. Below is a excerpt from RI License bill, see section (3).

20-2.2-4. License required.

(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to fish recreationally in the marine waters of Rhode Island without:

(1) A recreational fishing license issued in accordance with the provisions of this chapter; or

(2) A recreational fishing license or registration issued by any other exempted state that affords reciprocity to Rhode Island residents who hold recreational fishing licenses issued pursuant to this chapter; or

(3) A federal saltwater angler registration issued by the national marine fisheries service.

(b) An individual will be considered to be fishing recreationally if they are engaged in the process of angling or spearfishing, or if they possess equipment used for angling or spearfishing and are also in possession of finfish.

Good. Maybe the New Yorkers and Jersey Barriers will stay home next year then.

you guys just cofused me so bad with all your crazy talk about government. so do you need a license for salt water in rhode island and mass this year? and why do u register wit the feds if u dont need a license? and do u got to register wit the feds if u get a license?
