Not true my friend. Apparently there has been a huge Snook die off around Tampa/St. Pete

Snook, sand perch and puffers are cold water victims TCPalm.com

I figured there probably would be, Paul, but I hadn't heard that yet

47 degree water...wow...

But that was Stuart too, further north - although I saw that Ft Myers hit 31 and set a record

As lousy as the winter's been so far, at least we have adequate heating up here

On the other hand, our temps aren't gonna rebound to the mid-70's...

Regardless of the subject snapshots in time like the above is not proof. No different than if someone has an extraordinary year catching lots of stripers - does that mean the stocks are very healthy and regulations on fish can be relaxed?

A friend of mine that lives in Cape Coral told me that the snook are dying in the canals and are washing up on the beaches.

I saw that video and felt really bad for the guy. i used to vsist a fish hatchery or farm , whatever they call it (hatchery I think ) in southern RI. It was the coolest thing but you could tell by some of the stories the guy told us about legal battles he had to fight to prevent water polution that even the slightest thing could just wipe out handreds of thousands of dollars worth of fish. Once wiped out , it takes several years to restore the stock and unless you have deep pockets , you won't make it financially. The banks are unlikely to give you a loan to repopulate your ponds because there could easily be another cold snap or polution event in the next year or two so its too risky.

I hope somehow he can get back into operation of the fish farm he had. Just shows though that all farmers , whether growing grain or corn or berries or fish are at the mercy of the weather.

Been in Naples FL since Wednesday. Fishing sucks!!! Water is still very cold. Temps in the mid to high 70s but it's gonna take a couple more days for the water to come up

Crafty Angler 01-16-2010 01:59 PM

Kinda what I figured, Paul - I've done the same thing following a long cold spell...:hs:

Hope you sent your clubs down too

I was thinking, don't know if you've ever made the trip over to Useppa Island - it would be a great day trip for you and the missus and friends. It was built as a tarpon camp (some camp!) by Collier for the same crowd that was in the great striped bass clubs in SE NE in the late 1800's and the bar and dining room is decorated with great photos, vintage tackle and signed tarpon scales with dates, weights and angler - pretty neat

You take a small ferry over from South Seas Plantation on Captiva and it's a nice day trip when the bite is off due to weather

My wife and I went over to Useppa for lunch at the Collier Inn with my cousin from Cape Coral and it was pretty nice - a few cocktails with fresh grouper for lunch, a walk around the island before the ferry came back - no cars, just carts like Cutty - great way to spend an afternoon

Thanks Chuck. Played 36 holes so far.

Fishing Monday on a charter with Capt Brant from Salt Water Cowboys. We will see what happens.

South Seas Plantation and I have a relationship that goes back to the mid-70s. Can't tell you what was being shipped in and out back then.:rotf2::rotf2:
