Thinking about a kayak
 

I've been considering a kayak for a little while now. I'm not looking to fish out of it as much as use it to get access to areas I might not get to otherwise. I do think I will eventually fall victim to the urge to just drift eels on calm nights over areas that are typically at the end of my cast.. What kind of money would i be looking for something that I can transport a rod, plug bag, and a few eels and what kind of kayaks should I be looking at? Any shops in Mass I should check out for advice. I was thinking maybe Goose Hummock. It also seems like whatever I need to transport the kayak might cost me as much as the kayak itself.

Any info guys? Any concerns with used kayaks?

I have a heritage redfish14 and love it. On thought is that if you want something to paddle to a spot and get out, a smaller yak may be better suited. Once you have a 20 lber take you for a sleigh ride, you may want to change your thoughts about just using it as a shuttle

Mike. When the weather breaks, head to Billington Sea Kayak in Plymouth. They have quite a selection of different manufacturers and they're right on the lake there so you can try several out. The trial part is probably one of the most important aspects. I have a 15' Ocean Kayak Prowler Trident and like it a lot. I let anyone that wants try mine out and the offer is extended to you as well.
You'll need to set a budget and figure what fits your needs for your price range. A big part of the expense comes when you start rigging them with all the extras. But the beauty is you can go as bare bones as you like or outfit it with everything but the kitchen sink. That can range from @ $600 to $4k or more. :eek:

your best bet is to get a used kayak from someone on boards like this, you should be able to get into one for about $600 or so. You have to watch out for leaks in a used yak, but I think they are rare for sit-on-tops and if someone had one they would probably be up front about it if the leak was obvious, although ya never know I guess.
for you wetsuit guys, a kayak and a wetsuit could be freakin' deadly for reaching prime spots. Still, Nebe's right, a sleigh ride might keep you on the yak!

Get a sit-on-top. From what you describe you could get a completely bare yak and just put a rod holder on it. The plug bag and eel just toss in a milk crate or tuck under the bungees of the talkwell.

I would go used, a lot of people buy them and find out it's not for them. Just make sure the bottom isn't trashed and the top isn't full of holes from being stripped.

I strap my yak down in the pickup bed, but almost no one else seems to.

I got a SOT back in 2008 and I love it. It's 11' 6" Pelican Castaway Angler and it came with a rod holder already installed. It was a "floor" model at Sports Authority and I probably put out $500 for the yak, paddle, lifejacket (waterskier vest, not just a lifejacket) and a paddle leash.
I haul it around in the bed of my pickup, and have gone fresh and salt. I particularly love fishing fresh at night when the fish are not as shy and the big boys come out to feed.

The one thing I really like is the stability. Although there are those that swear by the Sit In style, I would also suggest checking out different models and styles to find you own comfort level.

Then find out just how long you will spend on the water!
Trust me, you will not want to leave.

I grabbed a cheap basic pelican model on craigslist for 175 bucks and use it every spring for largemouth in the local ponds before tuna season gets rolling. The kayak life is fun and enjoyable start cheap and just have fun with it.

Luds I got a 9ft Advanced Elements Inflatable kayak.Real heavy duty inflatable yak.I use it for trolling,drifting and spot access.It packs up nice and small,sets up in minutes and is light.Perfect for recon missions.It may be going up for sale as I've recently picked up another inflatable 12fter with pedals.Don't dismiss inflatables.The better ones are built like zodiac boats and can be fished from without any problems.

he will be with to me but it's not a bigfish and afterhours type of getaway. we have a buddy getting married. just want to make that clear. lol.

I do this some, but it is not as simple as it seems. Launching through waves on a rock beach in the dark with a 10 ft rod and a plug bag is not a pleasant experince, even with a wet suit.

what about one of those paddle boards? (the surf-board things that people stand up and paddle)
it would be cool to fight a fish form one of those I'm sure!

one of those bass tubes that guys use for fresh water bass in ponds would be deadly in a shallow cove on a windless night...

i've definately been thinking about how its going to look. its only going to look worse once our "couple friends" arrive the next day (especially when scott's draped in linen with strappy sandles - I can picture it now). we'll have to carry fishing rods every where we go just so people don't get the wrong idea - not that there's anything wrong with that.
