almost got got spooled by a bathmat one night... thought I had hooked the next world record :hihi:

I once hooked a rolling kelp ball in the canal and thought I had Mobey #^&#^&#^&#^&

There is more than one lobster pot with my lures attached....but the only time with a fish was off SW corner Block Is. trolling a mac, 30lb test on a Penn330. Still don't know what hit it as it just kept going and going and going.....

Twice in the ditch never got to see it just powered right down to the spool probably a shark. Tried thumbing the spool and never slowed it down either time, now I won't fish anything under 50# test.

once at the beach in marshfield just a slow steady pull and once out tuna fishing w/ a 30, when i could see the bottom of the spool i cut the line. while tarpon fishing a few years ago i got down to the arbor knot but still managed to land him

wow--excellent--were you on a boat and trying to keep up with the fish or were getting towed around.

I once got into a a good sized blue shark while on a charter about 20 miles south of the Gay Head light. That fish spooled my back! after 3 serious runs we finally got him to the boat--man was he pissed off.

Spooled by a humpback whale out on the bank. As the line started to empty out of the spool, all that I could think of was my rod and reel being torn out of my hands, lucky that a knife was within hands reach, if I hadn't had that knife close by, all my hand gear would have been gone.

And once, I had my spinning rod spooled by a tuna.

we were ancored up to the bridge at bahai honda state park and i was using a 20# spinning setup. i was telling the captain to unhook the boat as the spool was emptying. he took his sweet time but it all worked out. we chased him down after to land him quick before the sharks had thier way w/ him. my first tarpon, 125# class fish. i've been lucky enough to land everyone i've ever hooked(6) including a 75 pounder from a dock in key west w/ a penn 460 slammer on a light loomis rod i was using to catch jacks with.

I have heard that some tuna guys have clipped a ball to their rod and tossed the whole rig in as they were being spooled. I think I would have a hard time doing that with a Stella....if I could afford a fri#*in Stella!

Yes many times in my lake, when fishing for largemouth at night at least 4 or 5 times i have been spooled by pike, it has always been when i am not prepared for them with heavy gear, whenever I've used heavy gear, not a bite, I use the light spinning rod and line, and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzppph.

All but one were on jitterbugs at night, with one in the day on a big rapala.

I have also landed a few big ones on light tackle but I was in a boat and could follow them.

In the salt, a few times on Block mostly due to being under gunned.

I got spooled by the harbormaster in Duxbury Bay while fishing from the Powderpoint bridge.
Luckily he was able to free my line when he stopped.
(He was on a call, so I knew it wasn't intentional.)

It only happened once at the canal when i was a lot younger using sub par tackle. The bennys special with 30-40 lb mono, shimano reel. Something picked up my chunk that was sinkered tot he bottom, headed west and never looked back. I have no idea what it was but damn. Anotehr time a few years ago i almost got spooled in the canal while drifting eels. The eel got picked up onthe end of a drift, probably 75 yards or so. This one headed east and took a ton of 50 lb PP from my abu with it. Cranked down on the drag then thumbed the spool trying to stop it. Got close to getting spooled, thumbed it till the line broke. Another canal mystery.

Some fool in a 17 ft Montauk spools me because he is 50 yds off the Beach and is oblivious to any surf fishermen who have lines in.
I tell Tom I'll be right back, jump in my truck and meet these two clowns as they beach their boat at the campers. Give them my best shaved head roid range psychopath program and leave.

At Wasque beach. Took it to the backing knot. Ended up cupping spool to slow it down. Finally bit off the leader. Got the swivel and part of leader back. Realized it must of been a Brown Shark. It was early June and a small one was caught earlier. Both caught on a SS needle.

I was chunking off the vineyard. I got the keel of a sailboat passing very close to the jetty.

Twice that I can remember ... on spinning gear ... although I have had large tarpon spook me on my fly outfits numerous times, but managed to land them ...

... the first was when I was about 11 or 12 ... was trolling an old big metal spoon Tony Acetta ... on mono, with my Penn 704 ... let out way too much mono ... it was way back there, a speed boat went cruising by, I thought it was a big striper, but my friend's dad, who owned the boat and was running the boat let me know that my hopes were quickly being dashed as the speedboat was dutifully getting a couple hundred yards of yellow stren wrapped around his propeller shaft ... I was heart broken ... not because of the lost line or lure, but rather because what I thought was a huge striper or bluefish turned out to be another boat ... all hopes dashed ...

... another time I was fishing tarpon off Sanibel, we were on Johnson Shoals just off Caya Costa, outside Boca Grande Pass ... a tarpon took my crab and went for a run, I felt the hook slip, but was still on ... fought that fish for hours ... turned out that the hook had slipped out of the tarpon's mouth and hooked its pectoral fin, the fish was better than 100-pounds and because it was hooked in the pectoral, it fought like crazy ... we initiall thought it was a huge moo moo ... better than 200 pounds, but alas, not only was it not a record fish, but it was only just over 100 ... we got the hook out ... it was a four for four day on that one ... a few on fly and a few on spin ...

... another tarpon experience was fishing inside Pine Island Sound, on the edge of a flat just inside of Caya Costa ... hooked a nice tarpon on fly, this one wasn't to be tammed ... numerous times it got me down to the knot on the spool of the backing ... we fought that fish for longer than an hour, closer to two ... it took us from just inside the outside island all the way across the sound to Pine Island, where the fly line rubbed against a crab trap, and the fly line got chaffed ... and eventually the fly line seperated in the middle of a squal that was passing through ... quite a monumental moment to be in high winds, dark sky, white caps, heavy, pelting rain and lightening, when I tried to put the guns on the fish, as I was about to break its will ... and the line parted ... no worries, I'm over it, I don't really remember much of that fish ... felt like I was on the set of moby #^&#^&#^&#^& ... hmm ... feel like crying ...

2 come to mind.... last year I was backcountry fishing off Key West with a guide. Things were kind of slow, then we put on live pin fish as bait and were tossing them very close up under the mangroves. Whatever it was grabbed it and spooled me as the guide was trying to get the anchor up. 30 lb. test. Never saw it.
Another was fishing chunk off the rocks in s. Maine on July 4th. Stripped my 30 lb down to a couple of winds and then paused. I tried to gain some back but it started moving again like I wasn't there.
Hated leaving my gear in both but like to think they tore it out in no time.

Broke off on the way to being spooled. Keep telling myself it was a bass but it was probably a toona

Another time, which was my fist big bass/ blue ever and probably what got me hooked in this sport. I was fishing under a bridge in Weymouth catching school bluefish. Thought I was going to keep a couple and forgot the knife in the truck. Through out a fresh chunk 5 feet from shore due to the quick drop off. I remember there was a outgoing tide. I went to the truck which was a 5 min. walk there and back. Now I had just started bass fishing and was using a Rhino reel and a 7 foot ugly stick with 20 pound test. I came back to where I was fishing and my rod and reel where gone. "WTF!" I was pissed and frantically started looking around. I glimmer caught my eye and I could barley make out what looked like a rod but under water. I reached in elbow deep and gripped my rod. And sure as the sun comes up there was weight on the other end. The reel was stripping line and time was running out. There was a small jetty next to me which I hopped up on and started to walk toward the fish as it went down tide taking line. I finally got to the end of the rocks and started spooling the reel. SNAP! That was it. That was 7 years ago and thousands of dollars of gear, and three boats later. Most expensive rod and reel I ever bought.

I was spooled this summer after taking the boat to the carwash. I forgot to take a rod out of the holder before exiting the bay. It must have tangled up on the roof on the way out. I didn't realize it until a few days later. Over 300yds of braid was pulled off of my calcutta. I was lucky the rod wasn't damaged. Lesson learned. Spooled by a car wash.:smash:

That's funny ,,, then sad ,,.sorry for your loss..

I got spooled driving back from the Cape on 6. Had fished the Back all night and was dog tired. I racked the rods on the roof but didn't tie off the line on the VS250. Got home and all the line was gone. There was 300 yards of Ande Back Country somewhere on the Cape highway.

Like JohnR , almost, but broke it off. Friggin seal. Nice rush tho..
