My BIL Ike found a pilot whale skull at Coldstorage Beach years ago. We took it to the Center for Coastal Studies for ID. They pointed out the cuts from the knife the harvested the "mellon" I donated it to the Truro Historical Society.
I found a rib while clamming in waist deep water on Beach Point in Truro. My rake dislodged it and it floated up and nudged me in the butt. I nearly screamed like a little girl. But my little girl was with me so I choked it down.
Back in the day, strandings of pilot whales were like the community hit the lottery. People would run to the beach and mark whales with their knives and procede to butcher them. Life was hard then, money was scarce. They mostly lived by barter and cash meant that they could buy minor luxuries from away. The last great stranding in Truro was in the very late 1800s with well over 1000 whales. The locals must have felt rich..
