Wasn't there something 13-14 years ago with Poison PB&J on Monomoy to trim the Seagull fleet to protect plovers? That got squashed too IIRC.

yep, but the seagull poisoning happened. Some folks on SOL said some of the seagulls fell from the sky and through drivers' windshields. That would have been hilarious. I haven't been able to find any pictures :-(

Right along with the Sharpshooter from "out west' brought in to kill the coyotes.The "egg shaking" of the herring gulls.And... as you say the kamakazi gulls dropping out of the sky in town from that poisoning.Still this is going to fall back on those Dirty,Gas--guzzler,Ugly,Beach wrecking,PloverKilling machines.because that's the only thing left to blame:uhuh:

When does this nonsense end?:smash: Enough is enough already!:fury: I love animals and i am for protecting them if endangered but these plovers are freaking ridiculus! Stupid question....are these plovers on the Cape the only ones left in the world? If not then why do they care about them so much?

The whole plover situation is a bunch of crap. However, one good thing about killing off the crows and preserving the nests is preventing the plovers from additional nesting attempts which, someone please correct me if I'm wrong, could be up to 2 additional times resulting in the beaches being closed even longer.

If they make another nesting attempt, then that's something like 3 weeks of incubation followed by at least a month until the chicks fledge.

And now seagulls are falling dead from the sky. I don't know how much longer I'll be able to report...Oh, the humanity....

what the %$%$%$%$ is so special about the plover? let evolution's chips fall where they may.... its obvious that the plover's plight is being used to protect people's waterfront property and bar the public from public lands....

I don't get it, other than what has been said about the plover having become the poster child for those that wish to remove access to the public from public lands.

Isn't Cape Wind a menace to these things too?

How did they count 87 pairs the same way they count stripedbass?

Probably twice as many people counting those damn birds than counting the entire SB population.

The Seashore is home to about 87 pairs of piping plovers. The small, sand-colored birds and their nests must be protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act.

And how can they say that crows are the primary predator? Fox,Mink?

Must be the same people that counted the mated pairs

Lets see can we count the ways....Fox - Skunk - Coyote - Raccoon - Mink-- Osprey - Eagle - Owls - Falcon - Crow - Rat - Snake - Children - Rangers - Storms - Tides ETC...... and the powers that are protecting the plovers are targeting CROWS! Gee I wonder if they know the difference between a Raven and a Crow??

Seems to me that the presence of humans on the beach will help deter all the above from hanging around in our presence.

I think it all boils down to GRANT MONEY.

GF, a couple of years back they trapped out all of the fox and skunks up top. At one point the skunks were thicker than gulls there - when you walked up to your truck at night you approached it with trepidation. If it was a new moon I usually circled around mine with my necklight on checking under it and especially in the tracks. More than one guy I know got a spraydown.

Haven't seen a one out there since, a good 6-7 years.

Who are they to say that a crow's life is any less valuable than a plovers life.

All life is precious and none can be replaced..... is what i told an Elderly woman who questioned me on why i would go out of my way to save the life of an English Sparrow. She said... it's just a sparrow !

If i hear that they go ahead with the poison nests i'd be tempted to go down there and remove it all because that is just not the right approach.

Unless they had installed game camera's to prove whats happening to the eggs they cannot just RANDOMLY select a "possible predator" and "order it" to be killed by poisoning it. that's totally illogical.

same thing was done at Monomoy and parts of Nauset...
I had a talk with the guy they hired to do the trapping..he was so pissed at the audubon people that they sent to help him.. he was going to relocate the skunks to central mass where he is from...but they insisted on drowning them in the burlap bags (he said they won't spray if they are bagged, when trapped, and they can still breathe OK in there) he had them stowed in..he got so pissed he quit, he said they took a little too much glee in doing it too.
I remember the seagull thing, that did not work out well, as was cancelled after them falling out of the sky over main st. Chatham...and the sharpshooter from out west for the coyotes..

Stone the crows.....the coyotes.....the skunks and coons.......protect the seals and plovers......ban shellfishing........don't even think about it.........

Unfortunately, the Endangered Species Act along with lobbying by the National Audubon Society.

All life is precious... as long as it is cute, cuddly and furthers an agenda.

Minor edit: All life is precious... as long as someone is willing to give $$$ to protect it.

it made all the eggshells so super thin
that the egg sitting parent would crush
all the eggs and they'd dehydrate

there was also a problem with poisoning ground hogs
because the cattle would step into the holes and snap
a leg and then get put down.... so they poisoned
the crap out of them....

soon the owls ,eagles, and every other bird of prey
and furry scavenger started eating all these poisoned animals
with disastrous results

and they claim animal trapping is cruelty to animals :doh:

i am not against population control of any species -go for it

but i am definitely against poisoning animals

Plovers, Terns, sand beetles... et al.. the full arsenal of whatever species that is threatened, endangered, etc. ..WILL become extinct at some point, despite the delay, and their usefullness in keeping beaches closed to humans, is why I classify them as "tools" in the warchest of those that would keep us away...

Species go extinct EVERY day... beit mammal, rodent, insect, marine...whatever..ooops there goes another one...

carl , it they let me. i would get the stuffed owl decoy, a crow call and my 12guage and take care of the crows in one day ,no sweat.... also black birds and robins and seagulls and the tweetie birds too, after a 12pack of bud. o ya the coyoto's too !!!! save the plover. and the seals......let gods decided:uhuh:
