Anyone here weld aluminum?
 

So the asshat I bought my Starcraft tinny from,cut about 5 inches off the transom,to accommadate a shortshaft motor.I just picked up a longshaft,and want my full transom back.Thanks.:smash:

can you do it with wood? might be stronger than sheet alum....whatcha get for a motor?

It's a 93 Evinrude 40.The boat had a 56 Evinrude 30 when I bought it,so I feel it's a pretty good upgrade.:)

things gonna fly! maybe sandwich some wood over a few inches of existing alum to build up.

I would try to find somebody that TIG welds local, and have them bring the transom back to where it was...then built up the inside with marine plywood..
pity they cut it.. hope it didn't permanatly comprimise the strength of the boat... they should have just shelled out the dough and got the kit to longshaft the motor, rather than cutting down the transom... :smash:..
Was the hull rated to handle 40 horse originally?.. what length boat is it?

and yeah...sounds like it will fly!

I can weld aluminum, but I would do what don says... Marine ply wood- through bolt it with stainless hardware and load it up with 3M-5200

or...........
 

will sound strange ... but you can do a small bondo patch
around the spot ya wanna fix... say an inch and a half wide

make sure the aluminum is scratched up or has a rouch surface first

then apply your layer of bondo but not too thick,,,
just before it sets up... criss cross it with a razor knife
making a grid good pattern :point: /X/X/

Now you have a "RESIN" based patch and you can fiber glass
right "to that" with resin cloth and or wood layers as needed making it stronger / thicker than the original aluminum......

i have even repared gas tanks this way and it worked fine.

i've been welding for 25 yrs,because it;s so thin i would go with marine wood and glass
