Spread the word on Omega
Seems that the Fish Oil caplets that Omega sells to the public are full of PCBs because they make the fish oil out of Menhaden which are filter feeders and absord PCBs.
I trust that the public will see the foolhardiness of making Fish Oil capsules out of Menhaden and STOP buying the crap. |
also let it be known
to substitute walnuts for an oil
that fights the bad cholesteral instead of leaning on fish oil products |

By the way, PCB is a heavy metal and I believe in persists in the food chain. Stripers, bluefish, and tuna all forage on pogies, so those PCBs would transfer. However, I’ve not heard of any warning about eating stripers/blues/tuna due to PCBs. |
Almost every state has a warning about eating Stripers of some kind or another.

Health Alerts - Seafood Selector - Environmental Defense Fund Looks like I should be paring back on my bluefin intake as well. Too bad the seals came around, you can have 4+ servings/month of skates. |
PCBs
They are what's called "lipid soluble". They dissolve in oils/fats, and thus are stored in the fatty tissue of the menhaden, striper, human etc.. That's why we are warned not to eat the fatty darker meat of bass, blues, swordfish, etc..
Menhaden not being carnivores would not be nearly as susceptible to bioaccumulating PBCs as predatory fish, but still.... |
What is Omega? Is that a brand name or are you referring to any Omega 3 supplement?
Mine (BJs brand) comes from Anchovy and Sardine. I can tell you guys that as a runner, I had knee pain all my life. My eye doctor reccomended fish oil to help with dry eyes and also mentioned he take sit to help with joint pain related to martial arts. After a few months I noticed my knees didnt hurt anymore. This happened as I once again got back into running 5 times a week. I have to think its the pills, Im in less pain at 40 than I was at 20, true story |

I also would say that anchovy and sardines are on the decline world wide.

so if...
HALIBUT is the only safe fish to consume - or maybe Cod
one has to assume that PCB's dont get down to the depths that these fish inhabit.... also it's been suggested that farm raised trout havent had the exposure to PCB's and they are a safer alternative to wild trout. who serves the Biggest thickest SLAB of Halibut that you know of? i will feast there and C&R the poagie eatin fish |
further readings
An estimated 1.3 million pounds of different types of PCBs
were dumped into the Hudson River by General Electric from 1946 until 1977, when they were banned. ~ The most common route of exposure to PCBs is from eating contaminated fish. The EPA estimates an increased cancer risk as high as 1 in 2500 for people eating certain species of fish from the Hudson River or one thousand times higher than the EPA´s goal for protection. Air near a contaminated site may also be polluted by PCBs. By one estimate, residents of the Hudson Valley may inhale as many PCBs as they would get by eating one contaminated fish per year. ~ PCBs have been found all over the world, including significant amounts in the Arctic and Antarctic, far from any sources. In fact, several studies have found very high levels of PCBs in the blood and breast milk of Inuit women. no more rubbing noses i guess :rotf2: |
