Replacing front bench in my Whaler
The front bench on my Nauset Whaler done broke. It was very old.
I have all the pieces. I was wondering what type of wood I should use to replace it? Should I stay with the teak or something else. As it is I don't have a clue where I could get teak. Thanks |
a real full service boatyard that does wood repairs would have it or they could order it from a lumber yard that deals in exotics for u.
if your in ct try cedar island marina, Clinton 860-669-8681 |
Thanks maddmatt,
I live in MA but I will check my local boat yards. |
teak should be available at some of the smaller non chain lumber yards around for a lot less than at a "marine" place. there used to be a guy in Hanover called Henderson Hardwoods. pretty sure he retired but it's worth a shot. he had everything you could imagine.

The original seats on those Whalers were made from Mahogany. Not Teak. I worked at the factory years ago and worked in the wood shop quite a bit.

I first thought Mahogany but wasn't sure. I assume both wood types will be expensive. I just want to make sure I can match whatever is needed with what I got.
I was going to try Cape Cod lumber to see what they have. Once I find the wood and fix her up I'll post a pic. Thanks again for your advise |
Just found a good link for you.....your wood could be Teak too. I have a buddy who just brought his seats in to be planed. It's definitely NOT mahogany. His are Teak. This is a good link for sealers, and care.

Teak is VERY expensive. Anderson Mcquade (spell?) in Cambridge has it
|
try "the woodery" in lunenburg- steve has the best selection of exotics around.
|
Boulter plywood in Somerville will have it.
Maybe use Okume plywood? |
It's mahogany. Take a look at this restoration. Nice deck.

mahogany decking 1x4's work well not real expensive all cape & island lumber yards have it and and can get deals on less than perfect boards.

Thanks for all the advice!
I was waiting for the rain to stop before I ventured out for wood. The boat is still covered but I have all the pieces of the old bench stored in the garage. I'll try a yard or two and see what I can find. Thanks again |
