mineral spirits

just picked up some odorless mineral spirits and the stuff is white like milk. Says more environmentally friendly, which means probably won't be the same product. Anyone use this stuff or if you have noticed any difference. I am thinning Spar urethane with it for sealing. Why TF do they have to improve everything, can't leave well enough alone.

I use oderless mineral spirits at work and at home, I've never seen it white....is it possible it is a bad batch.. we recently had a shipment of Acetone here that came through all milky... we sent back the whole drum.. the next batch was clear..

not sure Joe but I read on other site someone experienced the same thing. I'm using it right now so i guess i will see.

Not sure where but someone mentioned this recently too. I've had a old can turn cloudy before and I think it was the result of a temperature change.

Think it might be a bad.

like gasoline with alcohol it absorbs water from the atmosphere..thus turning cloudy.

Paul,

Pretty sure its the same stuff I'm using. Is it in a white plastic container and called nature's green or something like it? Seems to work fine and I've had no issues with it. Its white as milk coming out of the container.

ProfessorM 03-11-2010 04:06 PM

yes that is the one. seemed to work ok as I just pulled them out of the sealer and all seems fine.

Paul do me a favor. Check your soak in a day or 2 and see how it looks. My concern is will it cause it to get lumpy or start to gell up. I have a big batch I'm using now with the old mineral spirits.Hope its not like water base metal spray paint. takes 6 coats to do what one used to do after they made it enviornmentally freindly LOL.Ron

I mix mine up in a tennis ball can and dip the plugs in it 3-4 at a time, then keep the mixture stored in the ball can. It does develop a couple lumps, but they quickly dissipate once you give the mix a good stirring before the next usage.

Ron you need to mix it up, spar and mineral spirits, every time you use it. If too thick just add more spirits. It settles to the bottom but as mike said a mixing will take care of everything.Try and use an air tight container. I use a larger pickle jar from BJ's. I then put a thick mil. plastic bag over the top and screw it down good. Sometimes i need to use a vise to get cover off but that tells me it is sealed good.
