Shelf life of bunker oil?

I've got some pretty old bunker oil hanging around and wondered what the shelf life is of this stuff before it turns to linseed oil or something. It's beginning to smell like that or is it my imagination?

I had some pretty old stuff but it still worked. Maybe 5 years old?

found out the hard way

that it takes the finish right off plugs if it spills....

I had a gallon stored in my fishing attic and figured I better do something with it before the container broke down and the stuff leaked through the ceiling. I made up a large bucket of bunker chum with the grinder and mixed in the gallon of oil, then froze it solid in a chest freezer. Last fall dropped it in a chum-bag and tossed it over the side while anchored near nomans. :fishin: It worked rather well.:)

I don't think it goes bad...I think it is like a fine wine, as it ages it becomes more "refined", one fishing buddy described it like this when he got some on his hands...

Bold, ripe, smooth and creamy. A real mouthful of bunker oil. Its tiers of ripe pear, fig, honey flavors are framed by smoky, toasty oak. An altogether complex and beautifully crafted oil with a chewey rich butterscotch aftertaste that still has all those delicious flavors chiming in .
