Team S-B Striper Cup Plea

Alright.
We are the premier striped bass fishing website in the Northeast. It has evolved into more of a "club" than a website. We have countless members, from the "beginner" to the "expert". Infact, in the past 24 hours, over 380 registered members have visited this site.We all have a passion for catching fish for different reasons.

My plea to all the members on here, wether you post, just lurk, or spend more time on here than should be spent. It doesn't matter. Become active. Wether you are for or against tournaments, catch/ release, fine, I don't want to argue. If you already signed up for the cup and I have convinced you to join the team, simply call On The Water and tell them you want to declare a team. Even if you fish with others from other teams, it doens't matter. I fish through it with a couple of people on other teams.

To those that ARE going to fish the Cup, I send out a plea, and that plea is that we are able to really put together a team that can make a committed run to retake the Striper Cup this year. I know we are primarily a shore group, but we also have some top notch boat folks. And we need more boat folks.

I know there is a lot of feeling that we don't stand a chance against some of the more "stacked/ qualified" teams (ie Team Realdeal, Team striper), but we have more people to fish. We don't have any endoresment deals. But so what. The more team members, the better the chances.

You don't have to be a "sharpie" or fish every night. Don't worry about feeling that you "don't catch big fish" or "fish enough", so why bother. All it takes is one cast to become a hero.

I know that some from here have already signed up for the cup, but say they aren't fishing for a team. That is your perogative, but to those that do, I ask why wouldn't you. In my opinion, I think the team thing is the best and whole essence of the Striper Cup.

So, in short and in conjunction with the "Roll Call" post, I beg that we as a Team make a concerted effort to do it this year. So if you are going to sign up, just put Team Striped-Bass.com as your team, get off the bench, and join the game. Its a lot more fun to play with others than by yourself. (plus you get access to the "Team S-B" forum)

......Pretty please.......

Was the war over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor???? Who's with me..............

.

It gives Sea Dangles and I a reason to incessantly bust each others chops for six months....plus some people like to compete and have a good time doing it.

I want to echo Mike's post above. In many ways, for many people, we are more than a simple website and more of a club. A lot of us fish together in small groups and sometimes big groups. We have a lot of fun and sometimes - like the CUP - we can do more as a TEAM.

So for yuse guys sitting on the fence, not sure if you want to fish on a Team, please give it a shot. Come fish with Team S-B. We are bringing on some new people to fish with us that haven't fished with us in the past - boat and surf guys - and our goal is to have even more fun and camaraderie fishing as a TEAM.

Fishing the Cup is a lot of fun, in many ways similar to fishing the storied MV Derby. One of the advantages of fishing the Cup versus the Derby is that you don't have to kill yourself for the few days, or weeks (or the whole month if you have that opportunity) that the Derby runs.

You can still fish at your pace. You can add fish to the Team standings that you may otherwise keep or weigh in for your club's tourney. Or that fish of a lifetime. Some of you will want to only keep a Personal Best, that is OK. If your personal best can also help out Team S-B that would be greatly appreciated. I know personally, I've only entered one fish in the Cup in 4 years. I still release 99% of what I catch, Cup or no Cup.

Conservation: Initially the Cup would have had many more potential fish entered but people voiced their concerns and over the years have reduced the total potential take for the tournament. OTW listened and reduced the amount if fish that could be entered and they also reduced counting towards the Team standings. Team S-B further endorses minimum sizes for fish well beyond OTW's minimums so that we don't end up weighing fish that will have little or no chance as the end of the Tournament approaches. We have not determined those numbers just yet but they will probably be 35#s shore and 43#s boat.

As an added bonus, I am considering a few limited run trips for Team S-B participants to go commando fish various hot spots such as Block Island and maybe Cuttyhunk over the course of the season to fish for Large.

Team S-B won the Cup a few years ago and has been in the running ever since, competing against of very sharp anglers - including paid professionals, commercial guys, and charter captains. It would be a great testament to our community to pull this off and bring back the Cup. I would be honored if you fish with us.

Rappin Mikey 03-25-2010 01:26 PM

I wasn't gonna sign up this year, but now, I am! Go Team S-B!!!!!

fishbones 03-25-2010 02:16 PM

I already signed up and am fishing for team SB, but if I hadn't this post would have made me do it today.

Technically, no deadline but you can sign up now online at OTW here: On The Water Store - Striper Cup Registration

Remember, its actually a couple bucks cheaper to sign up as a Team Member. So under put Team Striped-Bass.com in the box: "Club affiliation if applicable:"

Absolutely!

eskimo 03-25-2010 04:16 PM

I suck at anything that involves teams but as long as I get to land my own fish without a 'team effort' I'm in. :uhuh:

I'll make my way over and sign up.
eyes on the prize! :smash:

piemma 03-25-2010 04:23 PM

I cried when Belushi died. Although, there are worst ways to go than a "speedball".

chefchris401 03-25-2010 04:23 PM

Im in.

Funny iwas talking about this with Wesport Majia the other night, Im going to sign up and will be putting Team SB as my club. I fish with a small group of guys or alone for the most part, but Im out there 5 to 6 days a week.

Sounds like a good time.

eskimo 03-25-2010 04:25 PM

damn. there's no size Med t-shirts.

chefchris401 03-25-2010 04:25 PM

also can someone post the link to the rules and what not for the cup? Thanks.

Rob Rockcrawler 03-25-2010 04:25 PM

I didnt know we were up against "paid professionals". That doesnt mean much to me, but it would be cool to get paid to fish.

chrisjoe13 03-25-2010 04:26 PM

I've been part of a different team the last two years but,...I've just changed my mind. I'm in for Team S-B.

Yeah, some guys were getting something like 10k sign up bonuses....5k for every fish wieghed in for top ten....

Heard they were called "Team Mo Money"

BMEUPSCOTTY 03-25-2010 05:00 PM

That's it... I'm in... was thinking about not doing it for all the reasons redlite mentioned, but what the hell... If I didn't enter and caught a corker, I'd probably be sorry. I would like to make it through the cup with a fish on the board for S-B. That would be an accomplishment in itself, with all the talent on here.

Mike, does have a nack for rallying the troops. I remember we were all sitting around the Cutty Clubhouse and Mike shows up. He says 3 words and everyone jumped up and were fired up in minutes. I am certainly in for the team.

A few people have been asking what the Striper Cup is...

OnTheWater's Annual Tourney, cost is $35 for the tourney, weekly and monthly prizes, and a chance to be the Top Team for a Year. S-B won a couple years ago.

From OTW's website:

Quote:

On The Water brings you a 5-month, season-long tournament designed to bring the entire Northeast fishing community together to celebrate the most beloved sport fish in the region, the striped bass.

With the Striper Cup, our goal is to reach out to all striped bass fishermen and reward each angler regardless of how or why they fish. Just for signing up, all entrants will receive a registration package that includes a 2010 Striper Cup T-shirt, a commemorative pin, and an invitation to the 2010 StriperFest. All registered participants present at StriperFest will be eligible to win the NorthCoast Fishing Boat – You don’t even need to weigh a fish to win! This year, catch-and-release anglers will be able to have their accomplishments recognized by filling out a release affidavit and receiving the corresponding Pounder Club Pin. In 2010, five monthly shore winners and five monthly boat winners will all be entered for a 1-in-10 chance to win $10,000. New clubs have been formed, established clubs have been strengthened and the playing field has been leveled for club competition. Who will drink from the Striper Cup in 2010? Get your club or marina involved today...

...The Striper Cup is about reviving sportsmanship and camaraderie among striped bass fishermen along the East Coast, and based on the nearly 4,000 people who packed the tent for a fantastic party at the 2009 StriperFest, that sportsmanship and camaraderie is alive and well...
