truck/mechanic troubles

10 days ago my f250 broke down on the way home from codfishing. it was stuttering most of the way home and got worse as we got closer to home. my gearhead fishing buddy seemed to think it was a fuel delivery problem. i had it towed to my cousins shop the next morning and he thought it was the fuel pump. it made sense and he swapped out the pump and fuel filter. the fuel system was stll only pumping at 35 psi (it supposed to be 55psi, i'm told). it still wouldn't run. up until now no idiot lights had come on, but now the check engine light came on and my tranny o/drive light started flashing. the mech read the codes and said a bunch of things came up so he started doing them. he changed plugs, replaced a sensor in the rearend, checked the fuel regulator - still not running. he said he wanted to try a few more things and i agreed to let him have the truck for 1 more day. now the question is what to do about the bill. he's my cousin and my tenant. i feel like he didn't fix anything, replaced a bunch of parts that probably didn't need to be replaced and is going to try and whack me w/ a big bill. plus he still has my boat to get ready for spring. on top of that i'm going to have to bring the truck to the dealer - cha-ching! how should i handle my cousin's bill?

I would think you are at least out the $ for the parts? Cousin and tenant, huh.......heard about the teenage house party that did $45K in damage?

buckman 03-29-2010 11:06 AM

Did the check engine light come on? If so the you have a trouble code set that will tell you the problem

Raven 03-29-2010 01:44 PM

electrical system

mine did that !!!!

fading in and out ...stuttering

it's either spark or gas... it was spark related not gas

have him run a power test on the alternator/battery
to either rule that out... or in => takes 5 minutes

Paul, What year is yer ford. I may be able to give you a hand

Slingah 03-29-2010 03:33 PM

see what the bill is first...then if he tries to gouge you, just pay for the part that actually fixed the problem....hopefully he will treat you right....
these days with all the technology, why do we need to pay for troublshooting????

Niko, it suck when guys do this that don't know what they are doing.:wall:

But you need to change the title to Truck/Parts Replacer, as guy,s like this who have no clue how to fix a paper airplane call themselves Mechanics. :wall:

Sounds like a Crank Sensor to me. I mostly do Diesels, so its a SWAG without pluging it in and seeing if there is a good signal out of the Cps

If it is I think it's a recall item. Also there is an oil sensor on the top valve cover area, drivers side. My 7.3 has had both problems and same symptons. The check engine light does not come on for crank shaft sensor. Check for problem codes!!!

niko 03-30-2010 07:21 AM

thanks gents, i'll have him check those things

niko 03-30-2010 05:20 PM

crank sensor it was. thanks gary and buckman

buckman 03-30-2010 05:52 PM

Nice Niko

niko 03-31-2010 02:27 PM

he dropped my truck off today. i just took it for a ride and it's doing the same thing it did before. what a set of stones on this guy and he left me a thousand dollar bill. i hope someone has bail money, i'm ready to kill this mofo

BigFish 03-31-2010 03:30 PM

A grand and it still does the same thing??? Kill him and burn the truck!:devil2:

PRBuzz 03-31-2010 03:34 PM

That grand$$$, is that parts or P&L?

niko 03-31-2010 03:37 PM

stop talking trash about my truck larry:jump1:, want to drive me to work tomorrow. he has since called me back and told me not to pay the bill. now i just need to find someone who can fix it. well, at least i won't need bail money

buckman 03-31-2010 05:06 PM

Heres one more thing to look at. The computor ( I think it's on driver side inner fender) pull it off and look at the back of it. They rust out and water gets in and effs it up

In the old days I'd have bet it was the distributor cap has a crack that that is hard to see but letting moisture in. I don't even know of your truck has a dtributor cap but it sounds to me like its moisture somewhere like cracked plug wires , or anything to do with a spark.

Swimmer 04-03-2010 12:24 PM

Paul my gas F 250 did something similar and it was a recall item in the fuel pumps. I paid to have two new pumps put in and ford came out with a $5.00 bypass thingamabob that took care of the burping/farting and feeling like itsa going to stall out bullchit.

no distributor cap or wires - it's got a coil for each cyl. i was driving it yesterday and the check eng light came on. i read the code today and it said it was a bad coil. i'll replace it on mon - hopefully that's all it is and it's an easy fix. we'll see

MotoXcowboy 04-08-2010 05:28 PM

he put in the right fuel pump!? I would start there,
if you say you're still not getting enough pressure. check to make sure its the right one (pressure rating ect..)
its it aftermarket? pump try another maybe factory or better aftermarket pump? its hard to diag without being there..

search for TSBs relating your vehicle / symptoms

if you need help
pm me more details if you want, yr, model, engine, vin.
