I know this isn't the right forum for this but I'm not sure where it fits and, well, this one is the most viewed. I'm sure JohnR will relocate it if needed.

Anyway....

With all the rain we've had I, and many others, have standing water on their property. This water is already producing huge numbers of mosquito larvae and adult biting ones too. Does anyone know of a safe, biodegradable product I can treat the water with until it drains? I was thinking about just pouring a bunch of vegetable oil in the water figuring that can't hurt anything. Will that suffocate the larvae? Is there something better? Any advice would be much appreciated.

The trout stocked in your backyard should be having a feast on the larvae. Should have some nice fat rainbows in a week or two.

Bring some live brookies back and let's see what they can do. But I don't think we'll get any holdovers :)

We used motor oil. Forgive my sins...

A little kerosene was standard practice when I was a kid on the Cape- I think it was 1 cup to 3 acres- back then who knew.:smash:

You could go to the local pet store and buy a couple of hundred guppies to let go in the water.

Yes, it is that time again. Swamps are teeming with larvae! The Mosquito Control uses liquid BTI, although in a different concentration than the dunks. BTI works but keep in mind that breeding will continue in the site as long as there is standing water, so you need to maintain it throughout the season.

Also BTI only kills larvae up to a certain stage. When they become pupae they do not feed.

If you are concerned about the ammount of mosquitoes in your area call the Mosquito Control office and they will send out a crew to assess your situation.

A lot of people used to tell me about the use of dielsel fuel. It works by smothering the larvae. We use something like a mineral oil which does the same thing but in a far less environmentally destructive manner. I don't recommend spraying diesel fuel in any body of water. It works but thats not a good thing to be doing at all!

Much of the winter work we do, like ditch maintenence, cuts down on the amount of pesticide that needs to be applied during the breeding season. So less chemicals in my opinion is a good thing.
