Anybody hear any rumors about a 78# striper taken down south?

Marky was at BlackBeards on the Cape the other day and was told a 78# fish was taken in some catch and release place down south. I think he said somewhere in the Chesapeak? He said he saw a picture.

JohnR 04-12-2010 06:47 AM

No. But want to hear more...

GattaFish 04-12-2010 07:47 AM

Thats the fish I lost last fall when she straightened 2 of the hooks on one 4/0 4x vmc treble on my GRS Pikes...:wall::wall:

I got spanked and it was not even in current......

Pt.JudeJoe 04-12-2010 08:42 AM

Ahhhhh there is is! Every year when April rolls around the 70lb fish story comes out.

Sea Flat 04-12-2010 09:49 AM

A couple years ago it wasn't a story though. That guy with the ugly white boots trolling in Virginia caught a 73 lb. fish.

Susquahannah River has some giant prespawn fish this time of year. Those that poach in the restricted areas have taken some mid 60's from the shore...

piemma 04-13-2010 03:24 AM

Did a bunch of searches and couldn't find anything current.

Raven 04-13-2010 03:52 AM

Just my Opinion (.02)

But i think there's allot of 80 lb Striped bass out there

Catching them from shore is not to easy with that kind
of power.

They are the Spoolers and HOOK straightener's :uhuh:

Crafty Angler 04-13-2010 03:54 AM

I dunno, Paul - sounds like a rumor - or somebody reading an old resurrected post somewhere without checking the date

Speaking of rumors, I expect any day now to see unconfirmed reports of a 30# from an undisclosed SoCo location...:hihi:

piemma 04-13-2010 05:07 AM

I agree Chuck. You know what though? I think this is the year that McReynolds record falls.

I had a fish to the stern of the boat last year on a 3 pound Montauk Bunker spoon that was the biggest bass I ever saw. She looked up and stripped a 100 feet of wire and popped an 80# Janka leader. Down in your neck of the woods out of 105 feet of water. I was running a full 300 feet of wire out so I was down about 40 feet.

That would be the "ONE"

Not really... they have power to straighten hooks, they use their broad sides and any structure or current to their advantage, but rarely make long extended runs, fish 50 and over tend to be more like bull dogs, short bursts, a slow circle then another burst...35-45lbs are your spoolers....their big enough broad enough and are in their prime...

Rappin Mikey 04-13-2010 06:45 AM

Nope it was this year. I heard from another reliable source the fish measured at 58". It wasn't weighed but estimated between 75-90#. 15#s sounds like a pretty large range, but that is what I heard. Someone could always call Blackbeards in Eastham. I'm pretty sure it was the owner that showed Mark the picture.

Joe 04-13-2010 07:56 AM

That record represents a jackpot in some hands....If it falls to someone without connections to the tackle industry, or sport-fishing media, who took little action to capitalize, I'd believe it.
But if it falls to someone who demonstrates the ability to capitalize on it - like they had a plan beforehand - I'd be very suspect of it's origins.

CowHunter 04-13-2010 08:14 AM

I heard similiar, they did length and girth measurements estimating at 70plus... To be honest, I dont believe it unless it is somebody I personally know or a fish like that hits a certified scale... I guess many of us cary a 100lb scale for bass right? Every year there are rumors, but the fish was released, Blah Blah. The fish down there are all spawners loaded with roe and herring. Most lay the tape on top of the fish and go over the Football adding inches to length, also uneven bottom, Looking over your shoulder in the dark, rushing, etc... Pictures dont always tell the truth.. I have a buddy of mine that is like 5'3", give him a 40 and he can tell everybody it is a 60+ and it would be believable if you see a pic, (me unfortunately Im 6'4'- opposite effect)! Look Somebody caught the record fish off Block 2 years ago, but it was released, Another was caught in Sandy Hook Channel in 2007, but that to was released? Common, do we honestly believe that?? Especially a fish that may be worth several hundred thousand dollars???

Good post, and that's why I've always stuck with the old addage, "Show me the slips."

Another thread I was viewing recently had "40" that was probably 40 inches, not pounds, then the guy had a so called 50 plus based on the "formula." Keep in mind the guy said he's never broken 30 before this year, now he's throwing back alleged 50's.:spin:

This is a Jersey guy who caught this reported 71# in Maryland and released it. Info and pic from another site. Just sharing.........not verifying...

quick decision 04-17-2010 06:51 PM

i am still not convinced

tattoobob 04-17-2010 08:27 PM

That fish looks low 40's to me, How do you hold a 71 pound fish no like that it would be a struggle

stripermaineiac 04-17-2010 08:55 PM

LOL you don't. I've landed more than a few over 40lb and a couple over 50 and holding one out like that just aint gonna happen unles you a pretty good weight lifter.

piemma 04-18-2010 03:12 AM

...and after he holds the fish out like he is doing in the picture he releases it????????:smash::smash::smash:

So much BS online!

Nebe 04-18-2010 06:57 AM

it looks bigger than any fish I have ever caught, so i say congrats to him :)

Nebe 04-18-2010 07:10 AM

oh wait. BOAT FISH DONT COUNT!!

Raven 04-18-2010 07:19 AM

my ......he is strong to hold 71 lbs out like that :uhuh:

congrats Dude

stripermaineiac 04-18-2010 08:36 AM

There have been a few articles in the fishing mags about fish photos showin a fish held close and one at arms length. Look about 3 times bigger. LOL

l.i.fish.in.vt 04-18-2010 08:37 AM

funny,if a member of this site was holding the same fish the same way everyone would be bending over backwards praising the guy.bottom line unless a fish is killed and weighed on certified scale it means nothing to anyone other then the guy who caught it and to people who know him not to be a bser
