Not sure we discussed it, but if you're doing the team thing, 37-38# should be your minimum surf entry and 44-46# for boat.

Will likely be a few weeks before we see any numbers of large up this way, but there's always a wildcard thrown in every year.

Let's get 'em.

Do you think someone will surf-catch a 37-38# fish each week? With standards like that, so much for a weekly prize if members are waiting on those numbers for an entry...:biglaugh:

37-38#s shore 44-46 boat will likely be the minimum size that would make it at the end for team standings (and they might not be small enough but it is a respectable starting place). So relative to Team fish, yeh, that is a reasonable baseline. Weeklies will be smaller, monthlies will probably be that size or better.

Early May, I am weighing anything over 20lbs in hopes of a weekly. By the end of May, I would say 36lbs + minimum.

Good question and if last year is any indication, the answer is yes. Maybe the first couple weeks of May will be smaller, but by late May the big surf fish will likely be in the 40# class and boat stuff will be 50# class.

As for non team weekly fish or angler of the year, you could weigh anything you wanted. When I posted those numbers, I was referring to team S-B minimums.

So If I weigh in a smaller fish in the 1st couple weeks in hope foe a weekly should I even put s-b on the slip or no?

You can do it either with or without. On a team level, we're trying to keep unnecessary kills to a minimum. You can still enter a non team fish for a weekly, just don't put a team affiliation on the entry slip.

I've actually gotten three weeklies for 20# class fish in past years when nobody was weighing anything in, so its always worth it if you're trying for weeklies.

FYI, mid August or early May is usually the best time to sneak a small one in.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if a team member kills a fish for a shot at a weekly, what difference does it make if he doesn't put sb.com on the weigh slip? The fish is just as dead. It's still a kill by a team member, and by the end of June it probably won't show in the team's top 10. I don't think that OTW publicizes total fish weighed in per team--just the top 10 fish at any given time.

Why should we pussy-foot around with feel good half truths? We're entering dead fish in a kill tournament. I'm not ashamed to say it--why should anyone else be made to feel guilty about it or think that they have to "secretly" weigh in a fish to avoid making a team look "bad"?

I won a weekly once. I don't need another schoolie rod and Quantum reel, or another gift certificate from Boaters World or whoever their sponsor is, or a kit of 3/4 oz RonZs. I'll let any fish go that clearly won't make the top 10 unless it's a bleeder that's going to die anyway. But that's a personal choice. I just don't think it makes any sense to say, "oh, if you want a shot at a weekly, go ahead but don't associate with the team--we don't want people thinking we're killing too many fish". We're killing the fish whether we admit it or not.

I still have gift certificates for Chota,Black Dog as well as the quantum rod&reel just sitting around. Might be good for albacore I guess.I refuse to kill for a weekly also.

You are missing something...I stated you need not kill a fish under a certain size solely for the purpose of entering for the team competition. Weekly prizes are another motive and up to the individual. If you don't want a shot at the the weekly schoolie tackle prize, simply let the fish go or take it home and eat it.

If someone wants to enter a 20# fish into the team portion and get laughed at, go for it....I don't give a %$%$%$%$.

Most everyone I know and fish with who's entered for the cup is pretty dedicated and serious about competing for the cup and other prizes...otherwise why bother entering at all?

That wasn't the message I was sending and yes, its a kill tournament by every definition.

Maybe this year they'll have Costa del Mar sunglasses as part of the weekly package :grins:

The tag is still hanging from the guide on the rod, but I have used the reel--on a different rod. It's not a bad little schoolie reel. Probably could handle a decent fish on the rod that it's sitting on.

...with what we've been seeing come out of the surf the last few years, those numbers are a good baseline (let's hope that continues)...not counting the cycles of our beloved Canal fish.
