Stupid Stuff You've Done or Said Related to Fishing

I had a kickoff conference call with a new vendor I will be working with daily for the next 3-4 months and how successfull I am working with their software will probably have the biggest influence on how well my paycheck improves for 2011. The call was attended by the vendor's trainer, product expert, my boss, and my director. The first subject of the call was training dates which I thought I knew already. Of course they were all matching what i had until we get to the last set of dates. The dates this guy starts listing off are all in a 2 week period of time and I know the tides by heart for these days. I've known them ever since I started getting my stuff together a few weeks ago and i had scheduled the time off from work. My response was an out loud and not under my breath "What the F%ck?" I've never dropped the F-Bomb in the office outside of my tiny peer group and definitely not in this type of meeting. I have no idea what happened to my filter but I just started thinking fishing and nothing else.

Shows you what I really care about. Obviously not my job. I'll forever be know as the WTF guy. Surprisingly I have a 1 on 1 with my boss this afternoon.

You guys have any stupid stuff you've said like that? I'm sure the list of dumb things I've said to my wife re: fishing is pretty long.

We recently just got an invite to our freinds wedding, and I told the girl that I wasnt going to be able to make it. She asked why, I said its the same weekend as the Club Spring challenge. She got upset when she realized I was 100% dead serious.

RIJIMMY 04-30-2010 01:04 PM

stupidest thing? one time I turned down my wife in order to get a good tide at an outflow and I've never, ever, ever heard the end of it.

I was a student intern at a club on Cape Cod back in 1989. We had a good bite on big fish at HOTM and I decided to call in sick so I could keep fishing. I was in a friend's boat(before cell phones) and used the marine operator instead of going ashore to use a pay phone. The boss asked me what all the noise in the background was and I accidentally hung up on him....fortunately I only got a one week suspension.

I used to plan everything around fishing until I had a wife and kids, but alas times have changed. I wouldn't have it any other way, though.

I still do some pretty stupid stuff in the name of fishing, let me see...

I couldn't say as word would get back to my wife and she might start hammering me on it again :tooth:

Circlehook 04-30-2010 01:58 PM

Well, this website has frozen on my screen just as my boss walked into my office, twice!

STREETFIGHT 04-30-2010 01:58 PM

if my wife saw this post she'd un-load on all the stupid stuff i've said and done for sure. she says her year is split between fishing season and s-x season.

my lack of energy/interest at work due to the all nighters and amount of time i spend on the internet cost me 5% in company shares when i made partner...

oh well, they just dont get it :grins:

A couple years ago, the owner of my company walked in my office while I was tying leaders at my desk.

Last year, I skipped out of work early one afternoon and went fishing on the boat with my dad. My cell rang and I didn't recognize it as being the number of my boss and answered it. He's only called me on my cell phone 5 times in almost 4 years so so I figured there was no way he'd be looking for me.

while fishing

when i was a young man......
i had this monster carp on my line
had to be 40 pounds because it broke right
thru the net when we finally caught it...

but before that happened
i was running down the bridge trying to still fight it
and keep it from going further down river @ newton lower falls
passing my pole around the light poles real fast

I was so excited i thought i could
save some time and jump off the bridge
when i got near the end but i totally mis judged it

I jumped a little to early so that i tumbled
a few times but never lost my grip on the rod.
IT WAS AT LEAST 20 FEET:uhuh: that was wicked DUMB:smash:

FINnie 04-30-2010 03:39 PM

when i was a kid my family was at a friends house near my cabin in VT. he had the dam for the lake on his property and i wanted to take a few cast from the dam...fell in, thank god mom was there cuz dad was too busy talking. probably could have ended terrible if the water level was higher with faster current.

Also cant list the number of times i go out on rock banks only to get trapped by the tide. Some how i get poison ivy every time

Bosswoman :err: The times we live in. :rotf2:

Actually had nothing to do with the incident. She did say that she thought it was funny but definitely said to watch myself. She knows me well enough to know why I had that reaction and thankfully thought that acting like that in that sort of setting was way out of character for me. She's a 40 year old surf. Her and her husband have an amebury dory and a sail boat so I think she gets it.

Funny you mention that. I don't take lunches but have been thinking about doing that to catch up. I would get wierd looks though it might be worth it.

ecduzitgood 04-30-2010 05:19 PM

I'll give you the short list:
I jumped in the water while at anchor on Stellwagon to clear a line with a chaffing guard* that was wrapped around one of the props (inboard) that was hammering the bottom of the boat when put in gear. I did know enough to throw a rope over so I wasn't swept away but I didn't even consider the fact that we had been chumming all day and not 5 mins. after we stopped chumming I jumped in with a mask and swam under the boat to clear the line. It took about 10mins. and when I climbed back through the tuna door and was drying off I remembered all the sharks we have caught there.

After getting spooled I returned to the same spot the next night with a boat rod with 130# Dacron on the squidder that got spooled and fished with a 2lb. mackerel for bait.

Quit fishing for a couple of seasons when I moved in with a girl and was working about 70hrs. a week while she worked only 2 days grooming dogs and cats which she scheduled for my days off so I could help. After the second time I caught her cheating I smartened up.

I still show up where I want to fish anywhere from 3+hrs. before I know the fish will show to ensure I get the spot I want when the tides right.

I once dragged a tote with 100lbs.of mackerel about a mile down the canal. We thawed it for tuna fishing then my folks decided not to go out. Since I was staying on the boat in Bourne there was no way I could resist taking it for chumming bass.

*A tube with a 16oz. sinker taped to it that slides down the line after a tuna is hooked to protect the leader.

We're all really just simple creatures, aren't we?

Most of the dumb %$%$%$%$ I've done has been done in the name of more fishing time. I could fill a book..

SurfCaster413 05-01-2010 09:57 AM

I once stood in line at the race point ranger station for 5 hours in the dark and pouring rain in early april for a stick-ah, wearing only a t shirt and khaki's by the time i got to the desk I couldn't un clinch my hand to write my name the ranger had to do it for me. :smash:

BassDawg 05-01-2010 10:53 AM

prolly my first 850 posts on BOTH sites,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

there was that time i'd been up for two days, and decided to crash at my sister's pad in Jamestown, even after she said i couldn't. i had taken the nephews for the latter of the two nights, and i guess they could sleep there, but NOT me!!! still don't get WHY she and her (now)ex bounced me that morning?? sumthin' about sleeping during the day kinda BS!!!

still ask the DUMB to get to the REEL when amongst sharpies,,,,,,,,

the thousands of times i've talked MYSELF out of a "stay" or into a "go" when the BITE got missed because of it, going to SpotX when i should've gone to SpotY some nights, used wood when i shoulda used meat or vise-versa, just generally telling myself the wrong thing either by omission or ignorance!!!

Swimmer 05-01-2010 12:34 PM

My sister who hardly ever comes to see me stopped by the station one day with her youngest Kelley to tell me Kelley is getting married to Stu. She says the wedding is on the 10th of October. I look at her and said neither myself or Uncle Mike, SquidKidsDad here, will be there. Your wedding is when we are fishing the derby on the Vineyard sorry. That was a big oops.:devil2:

After snagging pogies in Wellfleet Harbor, jumped out of the canoe ...barefoot... and landed on the oyster shells that make up the bottom. Cut my feet to hell and gone, took a solid year to heal. Might as well had been razor blades.

I got that beat......

I was doing a presentation at a company wide meeting once and there was someone rattling change on the table to screw with me while i was talking and annoying the hell out of me....finally, and without thinking, i say "OK Who's the %$%$%$%$ing Dink?"....I was just thankful the owner was on vacation that week because he is usually at that meeting....

When I was but 18 I grabbed a 130 out of a rod holder after we hooked up......All the tension on the rod caused it to fly up and the big international smacked me in the head....stiches and blood galore!!.....sometimes fishing hurts......:(
