Removing old silicone
What is the best way to remove old mildewed silicone... Is there a trick?
|
What are you trying to do. Where is the silicone sealing?
|
If it's a simple seat around an antenna mount or some thing similar , use a single blade razor to surface don't be aggesive , finish up with Acetone ( Don't add to COFFEE) like the New Bedford TEACHER after loosing his GF. then just reapply and clean around mounting .
the fishing freak or raider ronnie can help they know everything about refitting ML |
In the past, I have normally remove it with razor/acetone but it is a little work and it is hard getting it all out....was wondering (more like hoping) there was a magic solvent that made complete removal easy.
I have some silicone sealant between a few deck/liner joints and in some places on the pilothouse. Also in a couple places I think it was installed in a sloppy manner and looks bad. Looks like this could turn into a weekend project. |
lol ,magic solvent for silicon :grins:
silicon based alien lifeform repellant -heh heh heh |
One can hope! When you are nibbling away at it you are thinking to yourself...there has got to be a more professional way to remove this that I just don't know about.

i just had some luck with goo gone and a puddy knife.
ran the knife over it dry... got as much as i could. then added goo gone waited then ran the knife again... lightly sanded and looks new. :) don't know if thats the right way but it worked. |
With the high temperature the other day, and my boat tilted a bit forward on stands, i can say gasoline with 10% ethanol and stabil overflowing the fill/vent sure made the silicon sealant on the rubrail come off all by itself. :fury:

Try some denatured Alcohol. It works to clean up silicone when it's wet and will help soften it when it's dry.

There's a rubber wheel you put on a drill. A pinstripe eraser. Go slow speed and press hard
