color preserve???
 

What are your thoughts on using color preserve?

I have heard some folks say they don't like it because it forms a barrier between the thread and the blank that the finish epoxy can't penetrate.

But... I am sure there are a lot of folks out there using it with nylon thread.

If you are using NCP or Black you do not need color preserver. Other wise you do use it. I like Gudebrod #811 it works good. I have used a different one one time and it went on in a milky color and changed the color I was using. The Gudebrod goes on clear and changes things very little.

What are you loooking to use it for? Guide wraps? Light rods? Heavier rods w/ underwraps?

I WON'T use it ever again on guide wraps. Too easy for something to go wrong, something like, a blotch, epoxy not adhering to the blank. If you want to keep the color of the thread, put a Gold or Silver metallic underwrap, Nylon over with no CP. It will look better than any other guide wrap you've done (my opinion) This is ALL I do now.

If you are not going to use an underwrap, you have a dilemma. Use NCP (which I personally do not like), or let teh color bleed. If you're lucky, you're blank is not grey or black, maybe it's REd, BRown, Blues. If so, use a color very close to the blank color, and let it bleed. What happens when the epoxy is applied, is that teh color below shows through - the thread is NOT turning black like many people think. so if you have a Maroon blank, and use Maroon thread, the wraps will look dark inside, however when they go out in the sun, they will sparkle and look sweet.

You could also paint teh blank, something I'm about to enture into using Permaglos and Tetors enamal. Hopefully it will be easy as I think, and I can have all sorts of different colored rods & Nylon wraps with no CP.

NCP use...This is what works for me

Metallics - no

Regular nylons - yesish - depends on if you want a different shade of the same color or not

NCP threads - yesish again however NEVER put it on black NCP. If using light to white colors yes & I paint the blank where the wrap will be w/kilz primer spray.

NCP to use - Gudebrod 811

Epoxy - Classic Coat by BD enterprises or AMTAK

F&D right now dont worry about it. On your fly rod I recommend no CP.

Tom Kirkmans rod building book
Garcias rod building book
Clemmens has a couple out but they are a little advanced, learn the basics first, get addicted, buy more stuff, learn new things, build more rods....

Its a vicious cycle

I hope you are prepared, it will consume you.

Kirkmans book would be my first choice
