Bait Pens
 

Has anyone used bait pens for keeping bunker and herring for extended periods of time?

I have the pens at the local marina and we can hold herring for most of the summer.
we use 1"x1/2" nylon coated wire mesh for the penn

How do you keep the "cage" from scumming up ??

How big are the pens ??

I have 3 pens , we transfer the fish to another pen and presure wash toe other

Does SIZE matter ???

Point Judith Fish trap Co. In Narragansett makes a nice oval penn. I brought one and have been happy with it. I paid around 80 bucks.

Mike, is it difficult to obtain permission to keep herring penned up. The reason I ask is in Falmouth your permit to obtain herring is included with your Shellfish permit. There is languange in the material they provide that you must seek and be granted permission from the Shellfish Warden in order to pen herring (presumably any amount over the 20 per open day you are allowed to possess). Ever have any experience with this issue . . . I understand your situation as a shop owner may be different than a "civilian" :D

How does bunker(pogies for you NE'ers) hold over extended periods of time in the cage? Whats a medium size on go for? It would seems easy to make, but Ive said that before too.

You're kidding right . . . da bunker are all gone - near shore anyway. Last one I saw alive was in Woods Hole 2 years ago. Damn thing must have been 18" long and weigh 3 pounds. Some yahoo had snagged it and was livling it off the end of the WHOI jetty . . . I left just as it spooled him.

Down here in CT we get large schools of peanuts up the rivers and tributaries, where they grow larger and move out during Sept. and Oct. LI Sound holds alot of bunker, its our herring thats been hit hard and are scarce.

Yeah, peanuts ! I never thought of that. I was thinking large bunker like we used to have. We had more peanuts than I ever remember along Vinyard sound. I could stand on the roof of my rig and see pods of bait work down the beach as far as the eye could see . . . nary a bass or blue in sight, too many choices I guess. The dump ducks had a field day . . . just paddle along with the school and dip their head in the water when they wanted another . . . low effort for sure.

Good luck on the house. My Queen is on the prowl for a bigger one too.

The town has no say on how many herring you can have. There are many legal ways of taking them & not just limited by permit. The town can regulate you putting a pen on a mooring permitted by the town, they do not have a say in marinas, which you pay for a slip unless specifically mentioned in their permits to operate. And we found out that we needed a permit by the coast Guard to put one in a River like the Weweantic (possible navigational hazard), which is almost never given.
If they do have any regulations in the town you wise to put one go over their head and get a propagators permit issued by the state only cost $10.

i made one with my friend out of light pvc and hardware cloth. havent used it yet, just built it last week.

who was the one with the large containers that you can use for herring, was it you van? anyways i need one.

I can get 55 gallon drums for anybody.
They only have had salt water in them.

Just need a little notice..
We just threw out 2 last week..

Let me clarify the herring pens issue.

The comapny is Point Judith Lobster Traps.
Phone 401.789.8310.

the traps are made of 1.5x1.5 inch metal mesh with a PVC coating.

A 1/2 x 1/2 plastic liner is used to keep the fish from escaping.
The traps are oval 2 feet high and 3 feet wide. Not 6 feet as I mentioned. He is taking orders now for a new build to be ready by late April.

The owners name is Price. Total cost is $85 per pen.
