torn between trolling mono or braid

Hello All,

I'm torn between buying some new line for trolling some umbrella rigs and tube & worm rigs.

I'm having a tough time deciding on mono or braid, somewhere around the 50lb rating.

If you have different suggestions depending on reel, I'm rigging a few Penn 330GT2's....

any thoughts would be appreciated.

If the rods will be used 100% for trolling I would heavily favor the mono. The stretch will help reduce break offs. The braid is a clear winner when bottom fishing for many reasons but mono gets the nod on trolling.

I disagree with FishOn. The mono will stay up in the water column, the braid will not. I spoke with the people who make the Montauk Bunker Spoon at the RISAA show and they told me you needn't use wire to trool their spoons just as long as you use braid. The braid will sink sufficiently to allow the bunker spoons to get to the right depth.

Trolling lures, baits mono , braid for fishing vertical.
Bunker spoons is a whole different thing, best done on wire and custom rods made just for spoons.

Ronnie, I bought a Seeker wire rod that is made just for the big bunker spoons. What a great piece of equipment. Actually bought it from a Board member, CapeCod Kid.

Ronnie,

I was originally thinking mono, but then for the same reason as piemma, I feel the braid will sink better, and bring the umbrella closer to the bottom.

Should I be concerned with that at all?

Just put a shot of mono between the braid and the lure. The lure will troll much deeper with the braid than comparable mono.

Wire is a PITA. Lead core is a PITA. I'm with piemma. Mono is nice when fighting a fish but braid is just so easy to deal with. You don't need nearly as much weight to get down deep, swimming plugs dig better and when the *thump* *thump* of the rod stops, you know you're weeded up.

If you're using it mostly for trolling, I'd get the Diawa Saltiga Braided Line. It changes color every 10 yards so you can accurately play around with how much line to put out that gives the best results.

As a note with braid, I'd definitely put a ball-bearing swivel on and a length of mono or fluorocarbon leader material between the running line and lure.
